...lose MS the current generation console war?

personally, i don't think they'll "win" as such anyway. PS3 will most likely outsell the 360 eventually.

however, i can't help but think the so called "elite" console could be one step too far. especially as MS don't seem to have made any attempts to rectify the current reliability problems.

also while i'm talking about the reliability issues, is it me or does it seem that those who have had 360's replaced with refurbs then get into a vicious cycle? it seems as though folks are either still on their original machine or they've had about 4 replacements!

From my findings this is very true, if your still in your first year warranty always go back to where you bought it and get a new replacement after that i (am) would go down the route of selling it for spares and buying a new core system.

Never get a MS refurb.

Yeah, I'm still on my original release machine. Had no issues so far.

I have no doubt that eventually the PS3 will catch and take over the 360 in terms of global sales.

I'm pretty sure MS know this too. As long as they gain market share from Sony this round then they will probably be content. If they don't, then I doubt we'll see a 'next box'.

Agreed...and they skipped on cooler CPU and a couple of pounds worth of WiFi module!

i beg to differ ,i think getting the 360 out first was a big factor in the ms v sony race ,even though the 360 seems poorly built , ms has achieved what it wanted to do
this is the best time to release elite and hdmi is very important in the long run

I was actually planning on getting a 360 premium a few days ago, however I decided to hang on and see what people thought of the PS3, MS then announced the Elite so I have pretty much decided to hold off on my premium purchase and see how both console fare over the coming months. If the Elit is priced right I will go for that, or indeed if the Premium drops in price I will stick with my original plan.

In this time however, Sony may announce a release date for the 20Gb version (which I think would be wise) If the 20Gb PS3 comes in at a similar price to the Elite then MS have blown their lead in my opinion.

I currently don't need Blu Ray and favour wired connection over wireless, the biggest gripe for me is that £40 per year for live gold on a console with a good few years left in it really needs to be taken into account when working out the price, If I went live for 3 years then thats £120 for something Sony is offering for free.

Did I read somewher that MS were planning on releasing a new console every 3 years? If that's the case then I will not buy a MS console ever again, the best games seem to take a couple of years to produce and I don't want games announced for the 360 to suddenly become 720 (or whatever it will be called) launch titles.

I bought an original Xbox mainly for True fantasy online.......gutted!

I don't care who wins as long as I spend my money wisely. That reminds me, I need to cut up my wifes credit cards...she bought me a Wii :D

TBH I don't really like MS's approach.

First they release Xbox to get a foothold in the market and then quickly phase it out and release the 360, now they are releasing an updated version of their 360 with features that should have been present to begin with. If the elite had included an HD-DVD drive built in then I could have understood it but apparently it doesn't.

I see no advantage in the elite over the premium for anyone at all except those who will be downloading films - if the service comes here.
The HDD will be available seperately anyway leaving HDMI as the only difference. In real terms it offers no genuinely visible advantage to most people even if they habe a suitable screen.

According to Wiki the original Xbox and PS2 were above average length of console lifetime. The Xbox was not "quickly" phased out at all.

This is true however with the current buzz about HD people will want HDMI for when they do buy a new TV, it's all down to the price, if it isn't much more than a premium then why not get the elite?

I admit I may have missed a price announcement, any ideas? in pounds.

there is to much anti-sony bias.sony cannot recover which is a shame because their console is very good piece of hardware
If the sony people were less pushy about making their point I don't think the situation would be half as bad as it just causes people to come up and make counter points. See thedoc46's thread for an example.

but dont you think getting the elite out now will save ms in the long run against sony
just consider 3 or 4 years down the line ps3 games looking better because they had the foresight to include hdmi and ms using old component technology

A rumour of £350, seems excessively high to me.
People will want HDMI but people don't necessarily understand it.
Betamax was a superior format, VHS won. People ..... useless ;)

3 or 4 years from now the new consoles will be out and HDMI will be in later incarnations. I'll still be suprised if it is "noticeably" better than component in game though. The higher resolution becomes unnoticeable as you move away from the screen and I guess most people sit a good 8 foot from the TV, I still about 15 feet away.

that would be a seriously insane price for it.

I know this has been stated before but for that to equal PS3

£350 Console
£60 WiFi
£100 HD add on (guess)
£40 per year for Live.

£550 with Live for a year, ridiculous

oh sorry, you get an extra 60Gb storage, although you can easily upgrade a PS3 hard drive apparently.

PS1 = 10-11yrs.
PS2 = 7yrs (and still going strong).
Xbox = 4-5yrs (and killed off in a flash).

What I am saying is that Sony continue to support their previous systems long after their latest and greatest one is available, whereas MS just quickly brushed Xbox under the carpet.

As it's not out, how can you tell? As far as I have read about it they won't say if they have fixed them, but that may be about not wanting to admit to the problem. Also aren't they meant to be quieter?
