The Times Online reports on the setbacks that have plagued the LHC and some boffins have come to agree /a/ theory as to why these bad things keep happening...

Explosions, scientists arrested for alleged terrorism, mysterious breakdowns — recently Cern’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has begun to look like the world’s most ill-fated experiment.

Is it really nothing more than bad luck or is there something weirder at work? Such speculation generally belongs to the lunatic fringe, but serious scientists have begun to suggest that the frequency of Cern’s accidents and problems is far more than a coincidence.

The LHC, they suggest, may be sabotaging itself from the future — twisting time to generate a series of scientific setbacks that will prevent the machine fulfilling its destiny.

At first sight, this theory fits comfortably into the crackpot tradition linking the start-up of the LHC with terrible disasters. The best known is that the £3 billion particle accelerator might trigger a black hole capable of swallowing the Earth when it gets going. Scientists enjoy laughing at this one.

This time, however, their ridicule has been rather muted — because the time travel idea has come from two distinguished physicists who have backed it with rigorous mathematics.

It's all a bit confusing and creepy at the same time, no? :p

Read this the other day.

I've always thought of sabotage as a deliberate, "thought" kind of process. You have to have a sort of sentience to carry out such malovelance acts.

Shame on the physicists who proposed this. All the more so for dragging religion into it.

The project at Cern is bloody difficult. It's not bad luck, it's the result of a ludicrously complex design inevitably being difficult to make. Mistakes are inevitable. A leak a while back was a result of bulkheads contracting when cooled by adjacent helium piping and breaking; it was an engineering oversight and neither the wrath of the almighty nor time travelling particles.

The comments section is excellent.

Don't you realize, its not the lhc sending back particles or other mysterious things through time to prevent its switch on, no we're all being shifted to an alternate universe just slightly different then the one before, because its all self correcting don't you see, the lhc has been switched on thousands of times now and it destroyed that universe, or it may be local to earth, still your consciousness jumped because if our consciousness didn't exist then essentially nothing would and the universe or rather consciousness can't have that can it!

No, utter rubbish, why did not space travel implode because we will one day travel far in this universe. Why did the atom bomb not break because we used it on humans.

Its broken because its a piece of technology 99% of humans could not even contemplate

Paradox.

1. Start paradox.
2. LHC from future breaks past LHC, therefore doesn't exist, so future one doesn't exist to break first one, so still exists...
3. Repeat 2 until future LHC exists and present LHC doesn't
4. End

Because there's not the slight chance that the atomic bomb or space travel could be messing with the fabric of our time and space?

Sounds like rubbish and they haven't had that many problems. It's a hugely complicated and massive bit of kit, there will be teething problems and breakdowns in the first few tests.

If people want to find links with something then they will...

All the stuff at 9/11 was made up or deliberately brought up to get people to think in a certain way whilst leaving other information (which didn't fit the bill) hidden away.

I have a friend who works there. I shall ask what he thinks and if he has seen any ghosts floating around :p

It's a basic time travel paradox, if anyone/thing were to travel back in time to prevent/postpone something happening then they would have no cause to travel back in time in future. So even if they left themselves a note to discover saying you've got to come back and do this, they'd never have come back in the first place to do it.

Sounds like intellectual onanism to me. Gratifying for the originator but no doubt irrelevant from anyone else’s perspective.

Oh nice. A warning of the massive Flashforward spoiler in that article would have been appreciated. :(

I thought same, happily reading away then bam! suddenly I know what that series is all about having only just started watching it.

Haven't seen the spoiler but is it referring to the series? as in the book LHC is the cause from the beginning and there's no mystery about that

edit: looked at it now and that's definitely about the book, being 21 years in the future rather than 6, I'll be very surprised if they use the same explanation in the tv series, as like I said it's obvious from the beginning of the book.
