Could Volcanic Islands based AMD with a 22nm SOI design featuring 2304 to 2560 stream processors be

I've only skim-read both articles so forgive me if I missed something, but it seems like both articles are merely guesswork based on a brief presentation. It looks like AMD have a conference in November where I assume a lot more will be revealed about Mantle, and probably about what benefits it will have on whatever (or both) console it is connected to.

PS4 already has a low level api, this has been said in a few articles (I think the crew developers mentioned it for example), whether it's mantle is another matter, but PS4's situation is not that much different to the PS3 or Vita, both also had low level api's.

MSoft have said that DX has hardware specific extensions, but that's DX so I'm still unsure about them. But Mantle does support HLSL so it might be there? (edit: and would stand more to reason it's on X1)

edit2: ok not really sure how to write my reasoning for x1 xD, mantle could prob work on x1, especially as it supports hlsl. But I've not heard much about msoft's low level api stuff, just hardware specific extensions to DX. I don't know whether mantle is on any of the consoles, but at least the PS4 and MAYBE the X1 have SOME form of low level api for graphics. But I don't personally think either are mantle. Especially if BF4 is being patched with it in December? If either of the consoles had it (especially the X1) surely it'd be there at BF4's pc release!?

Best thing about Mantle is not having to use DX, dont think that would actually feature on the consoles as MS will want devs to use its custom DX API (especially as Mantle is going to be a direct competitor) while Sony is already producing its own API and has been for ages.

Mantle just seems to be targetting PC and being as OS-agnostic as OGL - it might feature in the SteamBox?!? Really it depends on nVidia/Intel picking it up aswell as an open standard...

From what I can tell this is an API for PC not the consoles, although both consoles do already have APIs that are similar to this. Both the DF and Anandtech articles are just attempting to compare it to the APIs used in the consoles.

The question is if it will benefit ports to either consoles from PC or PC to either console.

To be honest that was what I thought as well, but as I skim-read it I wasn't sure if I'd missed something.

I think its more that Mantle might have a place because both consoles have AMD hardware and not that Mantle brings anything new to the table for them (well thats a necessary simplification for this argument). Without the consoles, AMD pushing an open API would just fall on deaf ears - it more than likely still may do if its competitors dont get on board...
