Bought a beefy desktop last month with Vista 64 but am having problems running old games on it. By old I mean stuff knocking on 10-15 years. Anyway, what with an Antec 900 already under my desk I thought I'd just plump for a tidy little htpc setup which I'll put XP on which had no problems playing the aforementioned games.

This is what I'm thinking of (yes, I know its vastly overspecced for what I'll be playing but I'm not going to buy a pile of junk either) :p

Fell free to point & laugh at the glaring oversights I most probably have made.

*I think the case comes with a 430w PSU as standard btw

Swap the 3870 for a 4850

Well, I'm only going to be playing stuff liek Quake 2, Max Payne, Soul Reaver, etc so that would be a serious case of overkill. Not sure I'd like something that runs that hot in a htpc case either.

why not run a dual boot vista/xp system ?

Well, I could but I'm a fussy git. I'd like one PC for whatever and another for gaming and I'd like to hook this new one to my TV. The desktop is on the other side of the room :D

md99 did u findout if the fusion comes with a PSU I rang today and thwey said it doesnt but reviews say otherwise?? Anyone else know about this psu issue?

I have the Antec Fusion Black which came with a 420 watt psu but no remote control.

I have had a HD3870 in it and now have the HD4850, they fit but you wouldn't want them any longer.

Hope that helps.

If you are going for a HTPC I would look at

HDD - scan some reviews for noise on these, I went for a Samsung when I did mine as it was reputed to be quieter, and it is the noisiest part of the system

- Get a blu-ray drive - you know you want to......

HTPC = AMD 780G & a 4670, though think the mobos onboard should handle 10-15 year old games, i.e. scores up to '2000 marks' in 3DMark 2006

RAM is overkill, get 4GB 6400 stuff. Get a blu-ray like royal fleet said too. Go for a newer card also, and perhaps a nicer case, maybe Lian-Li V350? You'll need a PSU but then ATX is fine.

amd g780 with optical and hdmi connections, 2 gig mem, 1t hdd and 120gig hdd for os, case, 400 w psu really dont need anything more, wireless keyboard with build in mouse/touch pad( blutooth) remote, Dvd rw or blueray, muilt card reader.
thats all you need.

The first two versions of the Antec fusion came with a PSU... the second one having a better display on the front panel IIRC.

The new version comes without a PSU, but with a remote control. And it's slightly cheaper.
