the 3 most significant sporting events in our nations history?

One of my mates has this as her question to her pupils at school. They have to write a report on what they think is a significant sporting event

Could you name 3? (personally i couldnt)

The most significant, probably Hillsborough - massivley changed crowd safety and policing, which probaly wouldn't have come about so soon without such a tradgedy.

Winning the world cup isnt really that significant, many counteries have won the world cup

4 minute mile - Roger Bannister.

World Cup 1966 of course

Ashes in the 80's with Botham, Willis etc

Twenties "Borderline" ashes series

Seb Coe/Steve Owen middle distance Olmpypic and world golds

Virginia Wade - Wimbledon

That's all for now

What 'Nation' is the teacher talking about?
As if she means the UK as a nation, then it rules out most of what people have put forward, likely with the exception of Hillborough as it changed things in many many places.

1966 is England's greatest ever sporting achievement, as it all the English talk about when they speak of football. At the start of every tournament they seek to emulate the performance at 1966, and frankly, why shouldn't they.

Spot on.
The question says nothing about Significant Achievements.
It asks specifically for Significant events, the Hillsborough disaster would earn her excellent marks. Unless she is really young, in which case it might just look like you wrote it!

Tbh I don't think any sporting events are that significant. They don't really make that much difference to the everyday lives of people, and they're just so insignificant when you compare them to say, medical breakthroughs which save lives.
