could you work these hours?

Guys im in a bit of a pickle.

im a security guard.

the hourly rate compared to some of the wages people are on here is laughable.

hourly rate: £6.61 (north west). 55hours per week.
at the end of the week after tax / insur i take home: £300.

here are the hours.

saturday and sunday 7am-7pm (12hour shifts)
mon an tues 5pm to 8:30am the next morning (15.5hour shift)

what im struggling with is finishing on the tuesday morning and getting home and only getting about 4 hours sleep coz i have to be back in work for 5pm that same day to do another 15.5hours shift.

i get to watch my laptop and use the net but man its sooooo boring sitting on a reception desk all that time.

joke wages apart could you guys do these shifts ?

i have £10k in the bank and i feel like leaving and using my savings while i look for something else.

The hours wouldn't bother me, a nice 4 day week, although working every weekend is a bit of a downer.

I wouldn't work those hours for that kind of money though.

Use the time you have there doing nothing to engage your brain. You watch videos? Stuff that. Learn new skills, subjects, ect. Whilst you job search at the same time.

I wouldn't mind a job like that so much if I could use all that time to learn new stuff. Getting paid to better yourself, what could be better? :p

I could and would if I had to, but that job, with those hours, for that money.... it couldn't get much further down the list of jobs I'd want to do.

I would be doing everything I could to get a job which improved on at least one of those aspects - hopefully all three.

For God's sake - use the time - learn a language - get a trial edition of Photoshop and learn that - don't waste the time watching videos or whatever

Please - use the time!

Totally agree, use the time as time that you're getting paid for learning! Get good at something you'd like to do and then either go self employed doing whatever it is, or get employment from someone else with your new found skills. Get paid more doing less hours and it would be something you have a proper interest in.

I work more than those hours, quite a bit more infact.
You are getting the **** taken out of you for your hourly rate though.

Either:

Stay, deal with the crap money and use the time wisely, such as learning new skill to get a better job etc...

Or

Leave and find a better paying job. McDonalds fits the bill I believe, infact prety much any job you work in will have a higher hourly rate, then do lots of overtime as you are used to long hours anyway.

Can only agree with what most other people are saying. You have a very crap job, but you have time on your hands while doing it......so make the most of it. Use the time to apply for other jobs, or do something to better yourself and improve your prospects.

Definitely don't just quit though - it will be harder to find work (in the current climate most places will probably just pass straight over anybody who isn't currently employed...) and you will end up in even more of a rut.

Good luck!

Used to work on dredgers for 14 x 13 hour shifts, I mean work, but then got 7 days off so 2 weeks at 91 hours per week or average 60 hours per week including the week off. I travelled up to 600 miles from home for my two week stint.

Nope,
11 hours and doesn't apply to many jobs. Security being one of them.

Daily rest - a break between working days
If you are an adult worker you have the right to a break of at least 11 hours between working days. This means as an adult worker, if you finish work at 8.00 pm on Monday you should not start work until 7.00 am on Tuesday.

The rights to breaks apply differently to you if:
you have to travel a long distance from your home to get to work
you constantly work in different places making it difficult to work to a set pattern
you are doing security or surveillance-based work
you are working in an industry with busy peak periods, like agriculture, retail or tourism
there is an emergency or risk of an accident
the job needs round-the-clock staffing (such as*hospital work)
you are employed in the rail industry and you work on board trains or your activities are irregular or linked to seeing that trains run on time

Interesting, I'm contracted 13:00-22:00 on Saturdays and then 08:00-14:00 on Sundays. Unless my maths is very wrong (and I have had a few!) that's breaking the rules.

I'm a delivery man (groceries). I don't think that is an exempted industry! It's a bit moot really, as I'm in late on Sundays anyway because of Sunday trains (boss is OK with that) but still before 9. Could feasibly get an extra 30 minutes in bed, and it all helps.

I am a security officer and i am on £9.50 ph i know its only part time but the money is still good i have done a job like that and its shocking when i worked then hours i was only earning £5.93 ph That is rubbish for a SIA licenced officer
