Council says we have to pay full rate council tax?

I think the rules where I'm from, Charnwood, is 90% for empty dwellings and 75% for single occupancy. Incentivising you to not have it empty.

I moved into my house in Feb and got 2 weeks free council tax as I told them it was un-occupied. No problems here, maybe the council are pulling a fast one on you?

The law changed on the 1st April this year. Most exemptions/reductions for unoccupied properties vanished. I'm currently selling a house, which I don't live in, while living in rented accommodation 170 miles away. I pay CT on the rented property, with a 25% single person reduction. I also have to pay CT for the For Sale property, but I can't get the 25% discount for that. So I pay more to the council whose services I do not use, than I do to the one that I do.

You need to contact the Valuation Office Agency to get the CT obligation removed if the building has been declared unfit for habitation.

I called the valuation office a few weeks ago to see what is required to remove a property from the council tax list. They advised me that if the roof was open and the property has no doors or windows in place that would pretty much achieve the requirements.

I'm gutting the house for renovation so it's not really an option for me as the house needs to be secure as I do the work.

I'm all for it tbh, far too many properties are just left derelict. Perhaps this new rule will get some completed or at least back on the market for someone else to crack on with.

yep, technically we'd be breaking the law if we knock it down without permission. so we'd need to get planning permission for the new build, in conjunction with a permission to demolish the bungalow

That is why having a couple of crack-head trespassers accidentally burn it down in the middle of the night is such a wonderful thing! :D

(There is nothing new under the Sun! Nearly 50 years ago, a large derelict house (With substantial grounds) near me that was subject to "Planning issues" mysteriously burned down in the middle of the night too! This didn't inconvenience the construction of the subsequent new housing estate one bit!)

why go to such extremes

could just let on of the thousands of young working people looking for affordable housing buy it...

One of the thousands of young people who have tens of thousands to spend and the knowledge to do large refurbishment works to a near derelict property?

Good plan.

Where did I put my tinfoil hat?
