Quick council tax question I need answering!

If I had a house of 3 students and one non-student, how does the council tax situation work? Does the one non-student have to pay the full rate of council tax due on the property or does it mean that all of the residents of the property have to pay some council tax, with the non-student paying more than the students?

A quick (yet accurate) reply would be much appreciated :)

In fact the liability is up to the whole household to pay the bill, though put the non student first. It is up to yourselves to decide if the students pay bearing in mind they don't have to pay anything if the non student wasn't there.

Edit: Heres the info you need http://direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndCommunity/YourlocalcouncilandCouncilTax/CouncilTax/DG_10037383

Surely the right thing to do would be to split the tax regardless.

Because without the 4th person everyone would be paying more rent/electricity.

But you just get a student in. I wouldn't say it's fare to charge someone for something they don't need or want.

It'll probably end in tears any way. Students late night partying with the other other person trying to get up in the morning.

Indeed, up to you to decide among yourselves who pay. If good friends, you may decide to share it. If the non-student was desperate to live in the house, I'd make him pay. That's regardless of discount, which your council will inform you of once you tell them the occupation of everyone (or check on their website).

Its "my" house, with 3 of my mates living with me. I am not sure if I will still be a student next year, so I am just checking things. Contracts have already been signed etc etc so I just wanted to make sure everyone else wasn't going to get bummed for council tax by me living with them.

They will then just try to tax the house in the first place. You either sort it out who pays or get the bill into the non students name.
