Hi all,

I really enjoy CS:S over the last 4-5 years of playing I have herd a lot of talk about 'skinning' and 'rates'?

Can any please explain what these terms mean.

I like to make the game run and look as best as possible but I always though editing game data in anyway would result in a steam ban?

Thanks!

Skins can be used to make weapons/models different and are legal, except in competitive leagues. Rates are to do with your connection to the server (no modding there :P)

FPS banana is a good place to look, never used skins though, but they are easy to install from what ive heard.

Rates are simply these following commands (these are the basic ones):
cl_updaterate
cl_cmdrate
rate xxxxx

It depends what server you are playing on when your rates need to be changed, it is advised to have between 66 and 100 of the update and cmd and around 25000 for the rate

Skins are changing the default look of the guns / scenery / player models and even the sounds that they make. Like mentioned above, fpsbanana is probably the best out there.

Skins can be disabled on the server side, so if your skins are not working on a particular server, then there is nothing you can do. Please be aware that there are skins out there that make other users bright yellow / green etc. and if found out will get you kicked. Its still cheating. Though VAC wont do anything about it of course. Plenty of people skin their games.

Thanks for replies guys!

Just to confirm, there is no way I will be banned for using hi-res skins? For some reason I used to believe that when the game is loading, game data was checked for any inconsistencies?

Also with rates, do I need to type in a code every time I play or does it get stored?

Kind regards,

Yeah I couldnt hit the broad side of a barn when I first started playing, some practice and altering that setting helped.

You won't be able to connect to a server that has "pure" turned on, it's not a ban, but the system does check you aren't fiddling.

Thanks guys,

Just had a game on my usual server, my 'ping' is always low (around 15-30). Someone said to me that I should sort your rates out? How would I go about doing this?

Thanks

type the following into console (these are for a 100 tick server though):
cl_updaterate 100
cl_cmdrate 100
rate 25000

Thanks for reply,

Few questions before I try:
I cannot get banned from doing this right?
Do I need to adjust these every time I game?
How do I find out if I am on a 100 tick server? I mainly only play on 'jolt' UK servers.

Edit: The server I am on uses a tickrate of 66, what settings would be best?

If the tickrate is 66, then use 66, 66.
You cannot find out the tickrate unless its advertised.
You wont get banned for changing rates, but you may get banned from the server if the admins of that particular server do not like it. But they should tell you beforehand.
Try my clans servers www.fireon-clan.com
We have a GunGame and Public server.

nah I got's quite a few nice high ress skins for my guns iirc you can get em for some of the maps too.

Look for the phong shaded player skins, makes the creases etc on the clothes look much more 3d and real :)

Also you can get some much better sounds too.

What Can The Server's Tickrate Be Set As?
You can NOT view this value from the Netgraph (See "What is The Net_Graph 3" below). Server tickrate values are constant and do not fluctuate.

Server tickrate = 100
Server tickrate = 66
Server tickrate = 33

The client's tickrate changes to match what is set on the server. This is why it's important that you change your client settings to match the server's settings. If your client settings are not set to match the server's settings, then you wont see the benefits of higher tickrates. See the section below on "What Should My Client Settings Be" to change your client settings to what they should be.

;)

doesn't lowering your rates constitute as cheating and the admin can and most probably will check the rates of all the players every now and then. And if found to have lowered them will most likely kick you.

Yeah a lot of admins seem to do that. Although some servers do actually enforce rates using the built in commands which is better :)
