Hi Folks,

After a long absense I have decided to give CS:S a go again. I have played about 10-15 mins put gave up as my ping kept spiking. Can you please let me know how I can go about sorting this out. I have changed my settings already to

rate 25000
cl_updaterate 100
cl_cmdrate 100

(I was told to do this by some random on a server) It hasn't really helped, my ping hanged around 35 - 40 (ntl 4mb I think) and every 30 seconds or so jumps to 100 and then falls back to 35-40 gradually.

Also, the last time I played CS:S I had a 15" Monitor. Now I am playing it at 1680x1050 but it just looks weird. I'd have though everything would look a bit smaller than it does at this resolution, plus it looks like the netgraph isn't all the screen, is there anyway of fixing this or is it right to look like this?

Also, please let me know any other settings I can use to help me out, I used to know loads but have forgotton them all!

Thanks

Matt

I have the same issue, I think it's just the way 1680x1050 res is done ingame. Like for me the crosshair shape is more stretched vertically than horizontally. I think it perhaps is something to do with the screen format ratios, like 16:9, 16:10 and 4:3. I get the problem a lot not just in source based games.

well try these rates that i use:

rate 30000
cl_cmdrate 40
cl_updaterate 40

i dont know exactly what they mean or what effect they really have but this works for me (no choke or anything).

You will get kicked from a lot of servers for using rates like those by lowbies who have no clue how they actually work.

OT: You don't happen to use wireless do you? And if you do, what OS are you on?

rate 25000 or 30000
cl_updaterate 100
cl_cmdrate 100

to be used in games any different is not acceptable. i game at 1680x1050 in vista 64 bit no problems. latency jumping i have that too in some server for some reason when they updated my broadband some uk servers just get ping jumps in the evening but thats a providers fault as i found out.

for 1680x1050 ress i suggest using crosshairsize 2000 and above im using 2050 good for head shots and etc... it might take time to get use to but when u will u should pwn. u can do that by tiping in console cl_crosshairscale 2050 or what ever you like to save your crosshair scale put that command in cfg and save it and make read only.

also i suggest to to turn net graph of as it distracts your concentration when u play well at least for me "whats the point looking at your fps when u play "

also use cl_crosshairalpha "999" makes your crosshair color much noticeable.

use fps_max "101" u dont need more then 100 fps in game so cap it to 100 then your game play will be smoother as your fps will not jump fps 300 down to 100 when there is battle going on.

violence_hgibs "1"
violence_hblood "1"
violence_ablood "1"
cl_show_bloodspray "1"

use these ^ to see bit more blood from your enemy when they hit it is easier to know when u hit them

cl_smooth "0"
cl_lagcomp_errorcheck "1"
cl_lagcompensation "1"
cl_interpolate "0"

use these to get better reg it checks for errors for example. if you have a ping of 50ms and u shot someone and it did not reg it tries to fix that. and even if you laged or your enemy did your bullet should still reg.

u can find out what those commands do in bigger detail just google it.

it helped me i hope it will help you ;)

On a lot of the servers the rates are fixed anyway. I game at the same and put my crosshair on 50,000. This then just creates a little dot as the sights.

I experience no jumping/warping. Just try a few different servers until you find one that plays well and has friendly people on.

I use fps_max 101 as if i use 100 my fps stays at a constant 99fps. I also have binds fr crosshair scale so i use 1200 for pistols and 3500 for rifles.

well would you like to explain to me what they do and what they should be. ive never had any problems with it.

Hi

I am using wireless and vista, I will give all of the above ago tonight. Thanks for all your help. I did try setting my rates to 30000, 40, 40 and my connection went really smooth, maybe I was just playing on a better server than before. Why is it not a good idea to have these lower?

Not played for a couple of years myself but when I did I think a minimum cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate of 60 were generally acceptable.
