Hello guys, I'm trying to get back into PC gaming and quite fancy playing Counter Strike again. I used to enjoy playing it against friends but I was never really that amazing.

I've seen this new Source version and wondering if it's worth the £13.99 on Steam? Or can you get it free by buying the Orange Box? (I know a lot of you guys give your duplicates away but wasn't sure if Counter Strike is one of them)

My final question is, does CS:S support Bots or have any way you can play on your own to start with?

Cheers

to answer your final question, Yes there is a limited single player mode, you basically make your own offline server and add bots as you go, its obviously a little more indepth than that

As for 13.99 on steam in my local game it was 8.99 and ive seen it cheaper from other more local retailers

As I've never bought a game on Steam, or on the PC for a long time for that matter, if I buy the game in a shop can I utilise Steam, get the achievements etc, or do I have to have it as a standalone game?

Don't think it was in the orange box... Bought that retail when it came out but I had CSS anyway. Get it as cheap as you can find it retail as you can add it to steam for future DL.

So far I've clocked nearly 1000hrs in CSS so at the £20 I paid I feel I've had vfm! Still play every now and then

They are currently working on converting CSS over to the Orange Box engine. It is in BETA version atm but it looks really good. It seems it will cater more the casual pub hero.

Thanks for the responses so far gents, definitely going to be scouring my local games retailers to see if I can pick up a boxed copy. If not I'll take the plunge on steam!

As you have no other steam games, I would pick up the Orange Box and see if you like TF2, plus you get Portal and the HL games. CS:S is a very different game to TF2 ofc but its probably harder for beginners to get into. I like both games for different reasons. You can get the Orange box for like £15 delivered if you look on google (edit, just looked on steam and its on sale, £11.89). I never actually paid for CSS iirc, came free with HL2, dunno if you can still go that route through retail..think you can only get Orange box and CSS separate now

Thing is I've already played and completed the Orange Box on Xbox 360 and (i'll say this quietly) I wasn't a massive fan of HL2 and the subsequent episodes. Loved HL1 but didn't really enjoy the second installment. So in that instance the Orange Box doesn't really appeal.

Only n00bs play CSS real pr0s play 1.6 it's way more l33t. The competitive scene in 1.6 is way more hardc0re. Hitboxes. Reg. Draw. Blah Blah.

Sorry, nothing useful to add.

css is good, so many hours burnt into that game , havent played it properly for months tho (bc2) i looked at the beta and its ok, i dont like that it making it more casual with the whole kill 20 people achievements rubbish.
kinda defeats the purpose of cs.

ps.1.6 is good as above but i cant handle the graphics now so css over that.

The better the people you play against, the better you become. :)

I've started playing again, usually on Teeside Office only, seen as quite a few people I used to play with play on there now.

CS:S update should be out of Beta shortly and, going by Valve's track record, they'll probably have the game on offer at some ridiculously cheap price as soon as the update goes live.

Note: This is merely speculation on my behalf but it would certainly follow the established pattern.

Yeah I might hold fire for a while and see if something happens on Steam. Although I fear that purchasing stuff through Steam is a bad thing, I've seen some of the deals that go on and don't know if I'd be able to resist. It's been easy so far because I've not got an account but if I was to have one then who knows what'll happen.

I think I got the complete Valve pack on steam for 25 bucks, you really can't complain the amount of use I got for my money is just silly!
