People rave about this game. I only really play COD4 and COD 5 online.

Will I enjoy it? I know it's old so the graphics won't be as good, but I'm looking for something skillful and time consuming :)

Counter strike is one of the Best FPS games ever created, steeper learning curve than the games you currently play but well worth it.

Steam.

However, there is two versions of Counterstrike:

1.6, this is one of the later variants of the original game and is still played by thousands to this current day, but the graphics are getting outdated. (But people play for the classic gameplay)

Then there is Counterstrike: Source. This uses the Source engine from Half Life 2 suprisingly and therefore has much more appealing graphics, smoother gameplay etc.

You want CounteStrike:Source. None of this 1.6 rubbish (Dons fireproof suit :D).

Nothing wrong with the graphics at all, still runs fine! My clan has 2 servers at www.fireon-clan.com (Ips in there). Have a visit, we have a new host and they are running beautifully!

As for deathmatch and search & Destroy, its not quite like that. Its primarily a team game with either defuse the bomb, or rescue the hostages (Depending on the map). Though there are quite a few servers which run Deathmatch mods, GunGame (We have one of those), RPG mods etc. And there are thousands of custom maps!

1.6 is long past its expiry date, and the definitive version is Counter-strike Source. It's low on content compared to Call of Duty 4/5, but as far as pure gameplay go, it's arguably the finest online shooter ever made.

Skilful? Hmm, 1.6 takes more skill than CS:S imo. CS:S is full of retards that run and spray and get random headshots. If you aim correctly on 1.6 then you actually get a hit whereas on CS:S you dont ;)

It is great, but the difficulty curve is very very steep. So, try not to get too frustrated when you first play. Also read some guides for the main maps.

Go for CSS. I'd agree with other posters that 1.6 is long past it's sell by date, but because being good at 1.6 doesn't make you necessarily good at CSS, those who were good at 1.6 don't want to be bad at Counterstrike again, so they just blame the newer game. CSS has less gun recoil, from what I've noticed, but the hitboxes aren't any better, or worse.

The netcode in CS:S is abysmal, really is. I think the hitboxes are actually worse in CC:S compared to 1.6.

It is a good game, dont get me wrong and most people wouldn't know what to notice and just learn how to play it well (takes a while though).

The other thing about CSS is no matter how good you think you are, there is always somoene on the next server who can pull your pants down and rape you.

I totally agree there, I love CSS but it is way more random than 1.6 ever was and believe me 1.6 certainly can be random.

Sometimes, you'll be on fire on quite a few of the servers you go on and you think "damn I'm playing good today" then you join some other server and find that someone who can just about know how to aim, rape you left, right and center. Then to further you frustration, you see other people who are pretty skilled being taken down by the same player - who are also questioning how they just got owned.
