Whilst looking for a blast from the past (literally) i was wondering if there are still some half decent counterstrike (original version) servers around anywhere. Having played it since beta 2 or 3 my current available machine wont handle the latest versions.

Nah.

CS has been fully moved over to Steam for quite some time now (1.6) and there are almost no other servers running anymore. Even 1.6 has been dying pretty rapidly over the last 12 months tbh.

The steam thing is fine, but i found in the past that the majority of public servers were full of numpties - long live the old [OCUK] counterstrike server.......

There's no point having a CS vs CS:S debate. They are different.

Many of the things that people found good in CS are different in CS:S and could be considered 'broken'.

Many of the things that people like in CS:S just didn't exist back when CS was made.

I played CS for years and for me CS:S just doesn't come close. But saying that, I'm bored of CS now. The community is nothing compared to what it was and apart from the occasional game with a few mates, I just don't enjoy CS at all any more.

I still play it after all these years! Hard to believe i still do.God knows how many years ago, i cant seem to work it out but i know it was still in beta form and had maps such as cs_docks and cs_iraq and the colt m4 was zoomable :D Used to be in a clan too and we were at the number 1 slot in clanbase for quite some time:D We even played NIP once in a league game but needless to say we were thrashed:rolleyes:
Anyway sort your servers into alphabetical order and look for the jolt dust/dust2/aztec server as that almost always has players.

Actually, i prefer CS:S to any of the previous versions. I just think that CS has had its day, and its time to remake it from scratch. Any regular player will know that hit registration is hot and miss. When the reg is fine ingame, i can hit anyone. Sometimes you can sit there pumping round after round into the other person and it tells you they were never hit. Everytime Valve updates it, they introduce a new bug. And now its full of them. They just cant stop tinkering with it. (Though they havent for some time now). That said, i do still play on it, and when it is hitting terrible, i turn it off and play another game. I prefer the GunGame mod.

If you want to play the old CS's,

1.3 is still available to download and play - quite a few servers still run it too.

get google out and have a play.

I've played since Beta too. Just taken the cross over to CSS due to all the kids that hack or are just mouthy on 1.6 and CZ.

When CS moved to Source Valve went down the 'lets make it look pretty' line and forgot about the 'lets make this really good fun to play' feeling that made it so successfull. Its ok though, they have redemed themselves with TF2. Id much rather play that now, its just so much fun!

not played TF2 yet, but I love CSS so much. At the moment, not a night goes by where I don't play it

I've got beta5.2 (the best version imo) with bots, and I play occasionally with friends. First version I played was beta2, which was years ago.

Never did like CSS.

ive played CS since the beta days, and dont mind CS:S too much. But just dont enjoy it anymore as ive been playing it too long

TF2 on the otherhand is amazing. it was valves token effort at showing Gameplay > Graphics

I have played since it was rolled out into steam, but have found servers such as jolt to have no atmosphere compared to the days when i played on the [OcUK] and [UOcUK] servers.

i bought cs as the download mod to half life when it came out when i was little back in late 2000 i think it was.

anyways... i really like the look TF2 has you hardly even realise they're like animated characters after you getting firing rockets and all sorts lol.

I think the uocuk people still play :) (I think they play on the GSV's servers)

I find CS:S broken, buggy, with hit box problems, registration problems, lag problems, etc. Valve broke it some time ago.

I hear people regularly say this on various forums but personally I've never had a problem with CSS. No lag, no hit box problem, no reg problems, nothing.

CSS works fine providing you've configured your rates right and you have a decent internet connection :)
