Couple of HD questions

Have been forced to sell my Raptor as PC is in the lounge & the screaming cat noise is very annoying. So was going to replace it with a Hitichi 250gb. Is there much performance difference in the 16mb version for the extra £15? Also if was to raid 0 2X160gb instead of the single 250mb what kind of noise can i expect?

If it's £15 for an extra 8Mb of cache only then it's not worth it, there's a big difference between 2Mb & 8Mb caches but not much between 8Mb & 16Mb.

RAIDing 2 drives will pretty much always be noiser than 1 single drive (of the same kind) simply because you have two lots of spin noise (shouldn't be that loud really) but also two lots of synchronised seek noise.

thanks..just concerned that the raid setup will be equal in noise to the raptor. Whats the recommended disks these days for quietness?

Samsung are the quietest drives at the moment, as they have been for some time. The P120 models are particulary quiet, and the performance is just a smidge less than the fastest 7200rpm drives.

I have a 400Gb Samsung Spinpoint and it's pretty quiet.

OcUK are doing them for £67.99 + Vat, or the 320Gb for £53.99 + Vat.

I have the highly recommended 250Gb Drive, and they are not only far quieter than my Hitachi SATA300 drive, but faster as well.
