I really would like to buy a macbook but have a few questions first if i may.

-Is the 13" screen ok to use? I would be using it for general internet use but would use it for web design and photo editing too from time to time.

-I have a spare laptop (2.2Ghz C2D, 2GB RAM, 400GB HDD) and im thinking of selling this to fund some of the macbook.

-The 3 models are £699, £829 and £949. What would these models cost using HE discount?

-When using HE discount, do you get 3 years warranty? Or do you HAVE to take out applecare to get the extended warranty?

Thanks peoples, i think i could get £500 for my Toshiba laptop which i dont use, and would love to put a few pennies towards the Macbook.

Im posting this now on the base model. It's fine for general internet browsing etc but im sure most here will recommend Macbook pro for image editing etc.

Base model is £599 with HE discount. Dunno about the warranty..

HE prices:

You will get the 3 years of hardware warranty as standard with HE purchases, no need to get the Apple Care Protection Plan. The extra £58 gives you extended phone support.. Which you don't need to be honest.

Can't answer the other questions as I don't own a MacBook.

I just bought a macbook (the black one) on Friday. I love the little thing and find its use quite comfortable, but then I am used to a small laptop from work anyway.

I ordered the base macbook yesterday. You gotta ask yourself, is the MGP worth twice the price for your needs?

I went for the base macbook in the end as I decided I didnt need a DVD-RW as I havent burn a DVD in 18 months, and have my desktop for that If I need to, I just e-mail stuff, or send it over the network or usb stick.

There aint much diff between a 2.1 C2D and the 2.4 C2D, plus the memory and HDD would need upgrading at some point on what ever model you buy. Hence, I went for the base macbook.

The base MacBook is great coupled with 4GB ram, I find the screen a bit smalll some times so I just use spaces quite a lot.

I'd recommend the top spec white as it offers the best all round performance :)

For £112 you get:

+0.3GHz more CPU
+1Gb memory
+40GB hard disk
+DVD+RW

Which isn't a lot to pay really considering the extra benefits :)

.

Yes it is, but if you need more space you can always attach an external monitor. The only time the resolution bothers me is when I am in Quicken and I am trying to plan my finances for the future as I have to scroll too much.

Photoshop can be a little tight but to be honest I don't use it too much...

Agreed, don't bother paying the Black Tax.

Agreed as well, I'm only a recent convert to photoshop on the Mac, and as I use it with my display at home - it doesn't really affect me - but I can see why it would!

Again....it 'aint worth it :)

Sorry - I'm coming off as the no 1 LordSplodge fan - but you beat me to the punch every bamming time! :D

The way I've always seen laptops is that they are designed for portability in mind. So when you meet friends who have bought a 17" 3Ghz ...such and such with a 2 hour battery life or less you think what was the point?

I think the MacBook is ideal - 13" screen with a 1280x800 resolution, a decent level of performance, portable with a great battery life. You've also got to remember that although it's a 2.4Ghz when it's running on the battery the speed is reduced (normally) as that's what they're all about...

Anyway, just my thoughts :) How about a nice 24" screen for when your at home to plug into and then the 13" when out and about? :)

Yeh the MacBook is great when doubling up as a desktop machine too. I have used mine on a external display many times, and it makes a great desktop replacement.

I came down from a 15.4" Dell laptop - which was only a portable when I was using it on the train or a plane... Whenever I was at home or work - I was using dual monitors - so to be honest, even though the macbook is a portable machine - I mainly use it with a display (90% of the time anyway!)

Using a display, wireless keyboard and mouse and shutting the lid effectively makes it a desktop, but with a tiny footprint. If you leave the screen open - you have the option to span desktops, or simply mirror....

I've personally never found a problem :)

Right, time to sell my beast of a Toshiba. Funny you should mention 17", my Toshiba is 17" and 2.2 GHz C2D and 400GB HDD. Its massive and the best thing is i only use it for iTunes and nothing else!

So i'll sell that and purchase a macbook. Cant wait, i get the feeling that OSX is the way forward since getting an iPhone and loving the way it works.

P.s. it seems you dont get the remote with it ? I like the look of that remote but wondered wether you peoples find it usefull even though it doesnt have many buttons ? I would use it for frontrow video and audio playback.

It's quite handy, but, to be honest I've only used it a maximum of 4 times.

You can use the keyboard to control Front Row, so it's entirely up to you.

Sorry to ask more questions but i would like to know the HE prices of the iMac's too please. These seem like lovely machines, with a bigger screen (would be looking at 20" basic model). Also do you know if i can upgrade the memory myself? If so is it laptop or desktop memory?

I think i can get away with no portability (i have a XP laptop if i really need it).

P.s. I sold my spare laptop so ive already got £500 waiting for me to make my mind up.
