couple ssd questions - first time install

Hi,

Spent the last couple of days reading here but just want to check im doing the right thing

Just about to install win 7 on new ocz ssd and wondered if there is anything in particular I need that I may have missed out below.

Put it on SATA2 port on mobo (got two SAS ports too but I assume done use them?)

Gone into the bios, storage config and set configure SATA as AHCI

Do I need to do anything else? Apologies if this is going over old ground, sure its been answered a few times...

Hmm struggling here...

Got 1 stick of mem in, just updated my p6t deluxe to latest bios just in case, just got the ssd on sata 1 and dvd drive on sata 2, switched sata to ahci in bios and trying to install.

The marvel controller bit when its posting is telling me ive no drives, then it passes through that twice and goes to boot from dvd, hangs for absolutely ages at the first win 7 screen (blue bg with swirly crap on it) then eventually gets to the language selection, pick uk etc and then select install it says "setup is starting" and nothing.

Anyone help before my dwindling patience crumbles?

may have spoke too soon, after 10 mins of sitting looking at the screen its moved on to the next bit. be still my beating heart...

So they're plugged into the red SATA ports?

Have you tried using a different cable for the DVD?

stuck on expanding windows files now. sat at 0% with the ... moving

must have installed windows 100s times over the years, thought these ssds were meant to be fast haha!

edit: very slowly going up now. mad

I saw similar issues when the cable was dodgy on my DVD when connected to AHCI. Weird I know but I bought a replacement Akasa cable and it all worked fine afterwards.

i think we may be there mate! its got past the usual steps and rebooted. something defo not right with the dvd drive, like you say could well be the sata cable, when its stopped doing its nonsense ill swap it over.

just out of curiosity, if im only putting storage drives on the other sata ports, can i disable the marvel controller so its not trying to detect drives etc when windows boots?

AFAIK if you've set it to AHCI in the BIO then it will sadly try and do that detection thing.

is 7.8 in the win7 rating bit about right for this ssd? 120gb ocz vertex 2

dear oh dear, not going well at all this. windows is now only seeing 8gb or ram instead of 12. aaargh
