I'm in final year at Leeds on a mech eng (Aero) degree and I've hated it since the first week in first year. A lot of people have told me I'm quite brave and noble for stickin it out til the bitter(est) end but they're wrong, its been blind stubborness and stupidity that have stopped me packin it in and as a result I'm scraping through with the barest minimum (about a 45 average or so, Ordinary degree programme). If you have no interest in something, and I mean no interest at all then it is the hardest thing in the world to motivate yourself to get it done.
Anyway, i finish this year and want to stay in leeds another year, I want to live with some friends and also spend a year in education that I can look back and on and not regret. What I really love and has always been my passion is writing, thats the only career I can see myself in yet I appreciate that it is the equivalent of saying "I wanna be a rockstar", hardly anyone makes it and it is very competitive.
However, having said that I went to the careers centre the other day at uni and although I expected myself to chicken out and ask about accountacy or somethin else with some money involved in it, I came clean, said I hate Engineering and I want to be a writer.
The guy told me about a course called Writing for Perfomance and Publication, a one year masters involving some very good sounding material, creative processes etc. This sounds like my ideal course and would love to get on it but the requirements state a good Honours degree in a relevant discipline, after this year I will qualify only with the degree part. The guy said I should ring the head of course and ask to speak to him and also email him somethin I've written.
Now I've written a lot of things, but mainly for pleasure and I'm not sure whether I'd like to submit any of it. That means I would have to write, from scratch, a 2 to 3 thousand word portfolio that my potential can be judged from.
What I want your opinions/advice on is, is it worth it? Am I putting my hopes in something that I have no chance of getting on? Any sort of input here other than sarcasm will be greatly appreciated. Nice1
