Coventry bang/shock wave

I remember walking over the Brecon Beacons and two Hawks and a Tornado flew through the valley beneath us. Absolutely awesome!

isn't that the Mach loop teritory ? I am sure there is a geeser on these forums that takes fantastic shots of fighter jets going through there at high speeds ? I could be mistaken though ?

Where did you read this? From watching various videos it sounds like it's just one short bang.

Err because the video is being shot from a standstill!!

My local airport is reporting that it was the one that said the code from the Heli was an error.

BBC News - Typhoon sonic boom...It was ATC @GlosAirport who told the helicopter pilot he was using the wrong code!

Go to snowdonia little bit of climbing and you can watch them flying past from above and very close :D

including big transport planes :D

I've seen a few Hawks when I've been there but they are were pretty high up. This was more the shock factor than anything else. Literally a low growl for a few seconds, a loud roar as it shot over (a second max) and then quiet again as it was gone.:p

Scottish Highlands used to be awesome for plane-spotting. Spent a lot of time up there when I was younger - Tornadoes, Harriers, Buccaneers, Hawks. Better yet, the US used to have a lot of stuff based in Britain, so you would see F-15E's and F-111's. The F-111's were insane - used to fly practically tree-top level....and they're not a small plane  I even saw a B1B over Ben Nevis once - think it was part of some big joint exercise between USAF/RAF.

I believe so. On the slower runs we could see the crews hands moving and heads bobbing about. On the fast runs the shock nearly made us fall down the mountainsides!

had it quite a few times up in the lake district seeing jets go past at the same height as us through a valley. such an awesome sight + sound

It's even better when a Spitfire, P-51 or Hercules do a low pass over one of the lakes, stopped traffic quite a few times that one, amazing stuff.

So did just one of them go supersonic then? I can't believe they both broke the sound barrier at the exact same second

EDIT: Actually, I guess I understand....the sonic boom is being produced continuously. Was always confused about whether it only happened at the point the plane broke the barrier.

Correct- the sonic boom is produced continuously while the plane is supersonic- but for an observer at a fixed point, you only hear the boom as it passes you. Someone further along the jet's route would hear it after you did... It's just like the bow-wave of a ship.
