Hi there,

We're thinking of buying a car and the tax on it expired the 1st of this month, the ower hasn't yet declared it as SORN or renewed the tax. Is it possible to get an insurance cover note for a vehicle which isn't taxed?

Cheers

I see. Do insurance companies do a cover note with tax cover for one day or will we have to tax the vehicle?

You need to insure the car & get the covernote before you can tax the vehicle.

nope you will no to tax it. Insurance and tax are two different things, one you pay to a company the other to the government.

No, you need a certificate of motor insurance.

You can do it with a cover note, done it a few times. Can't remeber but the note needs to be vaild for 7days or something similar.

It need to be an original cover note though not a photocopy or a fax

You can't, but most post office ladies are stupid and dont know the difference between a cover note and a certificate of motor insurance.

Same can be said for BMW drivers then. :p

A cover note IS a certificate of motor insurance, it's just a temporary one.

Perfectly legal and perfectly ok to get tax on a cover note.

I've been refused tax using a cover note numerous times, which I guess goes back to my point about people in post offices being stupid..

Yeah i had a heated debate with one last year over this. I told her to "go get the boss and sort this out". She was adamant that a cover note wasnt acceptable. The boss came and looked into it ( he wasnt sure either ) and lo and behold! i was right.

Silly cow didnt even offer anything in the way of an apology either.. she was still muttering about it "not being right but i suppose we can do it..."

It would seem stupid if you can't use a cover note... but then I suppose they want you to be untaxed so they can fine you :(

Waiting on my certificate and hoping it comes before the end of the month as my tax runs out at the end of April!
