The Cyberathlete Professional League has announced that they will have their own First Person Shooter game sometime in 2007.


The project, codenamed "Severity", is to be developed by none other than John Romero. The man responsible for cult-classics such as the legendary "Wolvenstein" and "Doom" series.

"Severity will be the first videogame conceived from the ground up to ensure the growth and appeal of multiplayer game competitions worldwide.”

The game is to be made in both 1vs1 and team format which will raise the bar in competitive gaming.

Sounds very interesting anyway, not sure how many of you knew about this, but it really does sounds promising from a competitive point of view, as it is made for LAN play.

Anyhow, lets hope and see :)

Should be good, as long as Romero still has what it takes to make a decent deathmatch game. It does feel however that the CPL want to force the pro gamer wannabes into buying thier own game a little. As long as the game is good, I don't see much of a problem with it. I'll sit on the fence a little for this one though as it could flop as well.

Romero hasn't made a good dm game for 10 years and even then it wasn't that great for teamplay 'out of the box'. One also needs to consider the fact that there is no way he will be making an entire game on his own, he must have some kind of team/studio backing him and so even if he has a good vision of a game, it may not turn out like that in reality.

Will be interesting to see if it is released "for free", I'm wondering if CPL might choose to try and gain a decent market share / base at first and then maybe consider retail releases at a later stage depending on how it goes.
 
i think the main focus of this is having a level playing field across platforms. CPL could easily sell it for £10 a piece as 99% of gamers will be able to afford that if they want to take gaming seriously. Its a step in the right direction at least....
 
It's understandable really. PC gaming is crying out for decent new 1v1 FPS these days, since all these apparently fabulous single-player games (FEAR, Prey, etc) are sorely lacking in their online modes, or the online FPSs are all team-based and somewhat realistic. There's no one big game these days, and certainly nothing that'll make for a good competitive game like the CPL needs.

It's also pretty funny too. Years have passed, and still no team-based game has managed to beat CS (it's been amusing watching Valve try to milk as much money of the CS franchise as they can, and not succeed all that well), and no 1v1 game has matched the heights of Quake3 and UT. :)

With Valve wanting to have an advert-supported 1.6 I can see why CPL are wanting to go to their own game. The probably wouldn't get much of a cut of CS 1.6 advert money when using it in leagues and I doubt their sponsors would be too happy with competitor ads in a final.

A CPL-controlled game would hopefully mean they wouldn't have to put up with things like unpopular new versions of games (e.g. Quake 4/CS:Source compared to the older versions) or drastic changes just before a league.
 
Yeah, that's a good point. It frees the CPL up from having to deal with publishers trying to push their big new thing on them.

Another thought that's just occured to me, is how much emphasis will they place on graphics? I mean, I'm sure they'll try to get it looking nice, but in my opinion, a lot of the fancier graphical stuff actually hinders modern FPS games from being decent online games. Fancy detailed textures may look nice, but they'll only annoy people if it makes the other players harder to see. HDR might be realistic, but it just makes it harder to see in some areas of a map. Contours and uneven ground simply make it more difficult to strafe and shoot. And so on. But if they place no priority on graphics, it'll simply turn a lot of people away, and support is surely something they'll need a lot of for it to do well, even as a freebie.

So it'll be interesting to see what kind of level they aim for.
 
I'd imagine that they will try to cater for all tastes; have a reasonably good looking game on max settings to attract sponsors/media/screenies etc and yet have it configurable for high framerate and visibility.
 
This was put on hold as cpl was bought out by Escalation Studios but think they are making Wii games instead of getting on with it. Anyone know anything more about it?
Nothing fills the 1.6 void :(
