CPU @ 108degres?!?!?!

Just received all the components for my new system and finished building earlier this afternoon. Booted first time and no problems installing XP or any drivers.

However everytime I boot AMI tells me that I have a CPU over temperture error. (missing the a is not a typo - thats what it says).

Also the ASUS desktop utlity for monitoring fan speeds, voltages and temperatures when launched for the first time screamed sirens at me saying that the CPU is at 108degrees C. Is this a mistake or have i gone seriously wrong doing something and need to address it immediately?

Spec:

Silverstone SG01-F SFF Chasis
Asus P5E-VM HDMI microATX motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 (with stock heatsink+fan)
4GB GeIL Black Dragon DDR2 PC6400 RAM
BFG GeForce GTX260
Hitachi Desktar 7K500 320GB
OS: Windows XP Professional x64

Don't want to lose a brand new processor :(

Any help will be appreciated, thanks,

Alex

when you say stock heat sink + fan... where is the fan? And with the stock heat sink did you apply thermal paste (or did it have it pre-applied)??

edit: just looked at ** case, that looks damn tiny for all the hardware in there??

The case was a tight fit for it all, but gaming hardware was what it was designed for.

The fan is mounted facing upwards on top of the heat sink, and for thermal paste it was already applied.

well for a starters stop using the PC, chances are you could fry it. Have you got any thermal paste? also can you tidy up the cables make it so there is better air circulation?

Take the side panel off.

Turn on the pc, go into the bios, what temps does it give?

Is the CPU fan spinning?

touch the heatsink, does it actually feel like 100 degrees under there?

Is it 108 farenheight or celcius?

Take the mboard out of the case and boot it, check the temps. That'll remove the airflow problems proposed above ^.

I'm inclined to believe a faulty sensor, as 108'C is very high for idle - even if you messed up the install. Quadruple check everything is seated correctly, fan is plugged in right socket etc.

agreed could be the sensors, but seen as you didnt put the CPU to the mobo you might wanna check the thermal compound to make sure it has been applied properly.

I shut it down, powered down at the mains and removed the case cover. I put my hand on the seatsink and felt tepid (this was max 3/4mins after shut down - but perhaps this is long enough for it to cool). It is tight in the case (will link some images in a minute) so I was never going to risk overclocking and realised it'd be hotter than my normal PC but I can't believe 108degrees so I'd like to believe its the sensor - is this a common problem?

Removing the motherboard requires everything else to be removed and a complete rebuild and as I've already spent nearly 4hours on the thing today so don't want another few :P however I'll try running it with an open case (would this atleast lower the temp slightly - i.e. if it was 108 constant again then I'd know its a faulty sensor).

With regards to thermal paste, I don't have any of my own is there one thats good in particular?

You're a potential fool if you don't consider a rebuild. As it might NOT be the sensor.

At the very LEAST, check cpu + heatsink contact.

thats packed!!, i suggest taking out the GPU cos that will be contributing to the heat. Use the mobo I/O port for the screen and check your temps again.

holy smokes :| I thought my case had some cable problems.. I would seriously think about getting a bigger case, as it's probably overheating in your case because there is no room for air !

Ok am running it now with the case open, still constant 108 degrees celcius, yet I've touched the heat sink and it actually feels cold on the sides. Checked the fan was spinning as well. The gpu should be easy to remove compared to the motherboard so I'll try that now and will let you know.

Have you updated the BIOS? The E8600 is a brand new chip and the default BIOS may not be calibrated correctly for it.

That could be a good plan, I will try that now and update with results. Also will set up a proper room fan next to the case blowing into it and see if that changes anything.
