CPU @ 108degres?!?!?!

This could be a bios problem. That board will not have a bios for that cpu out of the box. You need bios version 604 here. One problem though. It look's like they have pulled it as the latest is 506 from back in May. When you flash it use EZ-Flash and not the Asus windows software.

***Edit*** Bugger. Beaten to it again. Should'nt have taken so long to look for the bios.

hmm i forgot the new E8xxx's have theat even more crappy stock cooler half the size of the old one i would look into a new cooler (there are way beter low profile ones out there) as a high end cpu , gtx 260 in a small case won't be helping long term even if the temp sensor all that is wronge

According to the ASUS website my motherboard doesn't support any of the E8000 series despite the advertising that it supports the new 45nm cpus.

Also with a standard room fan blasting full pelt into the side of the case (i could feel the air coming out the other side) the ASUS utility still showed constant 108 degrees celcius.

Edit: I have kicking around the old stock cooler from my E6850 (which has a custom cooling unit), reckon thats worth a try?

Have you tried flashing to the 506 bios i linked to a couple of post's up? I know it says you need 604 but on the Asus forums some guys have got Q9300's working with the 506 one.

I couldn't get that link to work, went to the asus site but a blank mid section of the website (if you get what i mean)>

Works for me. Be patient. Their site is very slow. Scroll down to the E8600 and click on GO next to the 604 link and that bios is now up again. That's the one you need. Download to a usb stick and then hit Alt+F2 on startup to load EZ-Flash. After the flash clear cmos and re-enter all your settings.

Yeah Deffo change the cooler to a thicker stock cooler, my Q9450 was that thin and it didnt even mount on the Striker 2 Extreme because of its low profile

If the processor was actually getting that hot then the system would shut itself down. Your problem is either a faulty temperature sensor, or a faulty/incompatible motherboard.
Check mobo compatibility, it that checks out then RMA your CPU.

is that with other heatsink in plus the house fan blowing air in to the case?

chances are anything you make will be a better improvement mate, but the thing is (im not sure on this but) you might have to take the mobo out to fit the back plate of that heatsink. But while your at it you could try at hiding those wires better so cooler air can get in.

no those temps were with cover on and original heatsink, my plans for today are:

run entire system externally (i.e. out of the case)

run system with spare intel heat sink

I will run core temp for each of these, no eta on when this will be done by as I have a lot of uni paperwork to fill in today as well :(

Yup, double checked it was plugged into the 3pin connector labeeled cpu_fan on the mobo, I have a funny feeling it could be thermal paste that is the issue as there was very little and i did have to take the heat sink off once before. But as above, I will do those tests and let you know.
