Hi :)
was looking at upgrading my CPU as it hasn't been done for ages still got an i3 atm :(.

was looking at getting an i7 so i started to look on OCUK and quickly realised that the sockets on all the i7's didnt match mine, as my socket is LGA1156.

I read on my motherboard info page http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3309#ov that it can Support Intel Core™ i7 just cant seem to find 1 on OCUK and haven't brought PC items from any other place.

The usual recommendation would be the OCUK member's market... which you won't have access to yet :( Failing that I think a popular auction site is your likely way forward.

And at the risk of disillusioning you, don't plan on a "high end" anything. The 1156 platform was lovely by all accounts, but it is rather old, and you simply can't get a new processor for it (at least not new as in recently manufactured; you may find one that was never unboxed). But there are a lot of people on this board seem quite happy with their 1156 i7s and aren't planning to upgrade them, so you can be content that they are a good solid bunch of chips :)

If you really wanted to go higher, you'd have to look at swapping out the motherboard too...

Id vote for i7 860 too (I own one), despite the numbering the 8xx series was actually launched after the 9xx series of socket 1366 processors, the 8xx series is clocked higher as standard with a more aggressive turbo profile. Overall the 8xx series are great CPU's and when you consider you can get a used 8xx CPU/mobo/ram combo for less than a new i5 their an absolute steal atm.

The are a lot of people out there still more than satisfied with their 9xx series i7's and the 8xx are actually better than the 9xx for gaming (unless you require extra features from X58 ofc), rock on.

Any ideas where i would be able to pick 1 up?

As i was either looking for a mid end i7 for a high end i5, i think id be better with the i7 as its newer so wont go out of date so fast :P

The i7 stuff for the 1156 range is EOL, it's a dead platform, its successor 1155 is also pretty dead now.

If you can pick up an i7 860 for about 100 ish, it'll be worth it.

Ebay would be your best bet.

Not worth paying a new price for a discontinued CPU, especially as that's much more than new price was. You can get that CPU used from a popular auction site for £70-100 depending on how many other people are after one on the day.
