Hi everyone looking to buy a new comp but dont know a lot about the bits i need..can someone tell me the difference between the Intel Core i7 2700K and the The i7 960 ..i dont know enuf about the bits ..cheers John

Hi there,

The 2700K is the new "Sandy Bridge" type Quad core CPU. This uses the latest 32nm process, the sandy bridge architecture and is clocked at 3.5GHz by default (though can overclock to ~4.5-4.8GHz).

The i7 960 is an older "Bloomfield" type quad core CPU. This uses the older 45nm process, the Nahalem architecture and is clocked at 3.2GHz by default (though can overclock to ~4.0-4.2GHz).

Overall, the 2700K is by far the better CPU, it is faster per-clock (15-20% compared to an i7 900 series), clocked higher at stock, runs cooler, uses less power, overclocks further and the board it uses (LGA 1155 boards like the Z68 chipset) are much newer and support newer technology (like SATA3, USB3, Intel Quick Sync, SSD caching, future Ivy Bridge CPUs).

Here is a performance comparison between the i7 970 (a bit faster than the 960) and the i7 2600K (a bit slower than the i7 2700K).

Post a 'spec me' thread in 'general hardware' with a budget and what you want to use the machine for. They'll sort you out :)
