Hello All,

I currently have the following system

Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) overclocked to 3.2ghz

Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard

Corsair Dominator 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Triple Channel Kit (CMP6GX3M3A1600C7)

I have noticed that I could get a Intel X5650 Xeon 6 core 12 thread processor quite cheap, about £60 - £70 but the core clock is only 2.66ghz compared to the stock I7 0f 3ghz.

my question is I use my PC for gaming and the odd internet usage and watching movies. is this processor worth the upgrade at all even though the stock speed is slower than my current CPU?

I have noticed a few people on here mention it as well but don't know if its worth the upgrade or should I just save for a new mobo\memory\processor down the line.

also if I did get this could I use my current CPU cooler on it?

thanks!

TBH the 950 is still a great cpu.
if you are using the stock cooler then upgrade that then overclock the 950 to 4ghz+ for a nice jump.

well im sure you could manage 4ghz with that cooler.

i went from a i7 930 4.4ghz to 3570k 4.6ghz and can tell no difference.

Thank you for your cooperation.....

(sorry, some one had to :D )

at least you know what its referring too! I use the same name for online gaming and people just don't understand the name even though there it has a picture of ED209 next to it lol! guess that just makes me old!

for those of you who don't get it, this is ED209

Teenwolf - I am surprised you noticed no difference between the two processors as thought you would have done

is there any guides on OCing the intel I7 950 range? ive not done any ocing in awhile and all I did to get 3.2ghz is change one of the settings from 133 to 141, cant remember the name!

just a update on this, managed to get my I7 950 up to 4ghz without any issues and the CPU cooler is keeping it about 60C under load.

tried 4.1 but kept rebooting so kept it on 4ghz stable after 3d mark and a good few hours of gaming just got to wait now till Christmas to get my new GPU!
