CPU and smoothness in games

I recently got a 1080 Ti and noticed even if I'm getting 100FPS+ in games sometimes it feels a little choppy, for like half a second or so. GSYNC is on too.

Could it be my i7 4790k being a bottleneck?

I have the same setup and would be interested to know if it is worth upgrading! I agree some games can feel a little choppy even though the fps is high, I always just assumed it was something on my end.

Have thought about upgrading a few times but most threads and posts just suggest to hold off and wait for next gen.

Try maxing out your settings and putting the load on your GPU. If your CPU is not hitting 100% and it's still choppy it could be something else. I wouldn't think it would be your CPU as I don't get choppy on my 2500K and that's a fair bit slower. Are you overclocked? If not try that and see if it helps.

same setup as you mate and get similar results at high fps.

almost pulled the trigger on the 2700x bundle but better off waiting for the new 9 series from intel i think.

I don't think so, it has 2.3GB of RAM free when I'm gaming
what game? in case others have had similar problems with only 8gb ram. I know I have had inconsistent fps due to ram starting to page out, then catching up, then paging out, etc. with only 8gb ram.

Just because 2 gb ram is free, might not mean that the system is going crazy paging out here and there? Check task manager to see how much is being used/committed and if the paging pool is used much?

Or... are there other processes doing silly things, like virus scan, any defrag program or possibly even torrent reading/writing HD?

can't be other software in the background,I checked running processes and it was all OS stuff. I was playing Wolfenstein: The New Order on the highest possible settings (it loos amazing btw). I'll take a look at my RAM usage again tonight.

Upgrade to 16gb of fast ddr3 and overclock to 4.5 if you can. There's very little need to replace that CPU currently if overclocked for gaming. Single core at 4.5 it's likely faster than a lot of ryzen setups including well cooled ones. I. E if you aren't regularly seeing 90-95%+ cpu useage it's a pointless upgrade.

I used to OC to 4.7Ghz and so no real improvement in FPS so have it running at stock now. If I upgrade the RAM does it have to be the same make and model as my current one? I currently have these: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cors...l-channel-kit-cmx8gx3m2a1600c9-my-290-cs.html

Try and match it if possible. I'm running 16GB DDR3 and everything is smooth so it could be a lack of RAM especially if you're maxing out every setting. That said I have a 1070 which may be easier to feed than a 1080Ti.

Still shows 2.3GB of free RAM. Noticed it more in Seige than any other game, it's like when I used to play games on my old Samsung mechanical drives.

Are you playing in exclusive full screen or borderless window ? The last big windows ten upgrade 1803 has basically caused a lot of problems for g sync users, some more than others. It’s something to do with WDDM 2.4 , which I know for a fact has broken my refresh select button on my gsync monitor. If I use an earlier driver (around the 391 range) it goes back to WDDM 2.3 and my refresh select button works again.

I’ve noticed choppiness recently on doom and gta5 even though frame rates are very high I.e 150-160 range. With doom It’s REALLY bad it looks like you are waliking 2 steps forward and 1 step back the screen seems to shimmer in a weird way as if it’s not receiving the frames in the correct order or timing! It is curable if I switch to desktop a few times and select borderless window then select exclusive full screen again. Gta5 looks better but has a weird skip every few seconds playable but annoying.

There is a big thread about it on the Geforce forums (40 pages) https://forums.geforce.com/default/...3-windowed-g-sync-broken-hotfix-released-/40/

Check DPC latency - on a related note Windows 10 seems a bit meh for gaming and smoothness - MS doesn't give a **** what people actually ise their PC for and will happily run update tasks in the background causing sporadic spikes to DPC latency, etc.

but how much ram was used/committed and paged out? it can be paging out before all the ram is used up...

just thinking, if you put a fps cap within the game, is it smoother?

Was playing Destinty 2 last night, after it took 3 days to download, runs buttery smooth with no stutter. Had everything maxed too. Played Wolfenstein which is on a mechanical drive and that too was buttery smooth.

I think what I've been experiencing has disappeared, it happens in Seige now and again but its bearable. Hopefully the 9 series Intel CPUs with be in a socket format that Intel will support for years to come, otherwise I'm getting a 2700X.
