CPU at 100% load

Bit of an update.

Just for giggles I bought a TIM kit and reapplied the thermal paste as well as putting a new motherboard battery in.

On booting up Windows tried to install various bits and pieces but didn't say what they were - for about an hour it flashed up small boxes which said Windows is preparing to install files. However, the messages were all the same and only flashed up for about 2-3 seconds each during this period.

It then tried to install Ad-aware for some reason but kept failing each time as there were no files to install from. It was as if Windows was trying to repair Ad-aware as it wasn't opening up a Lavasoft programme.

I managed to cancel the Ad-aware installation box which failed five times. I couldn't remove the various Ad-aware files which were dotted around my computer as the there was "an installation in progress". In the end I had to re-download it then install it and then uninstall it.

HOWEVER, I ran Malbytes again and this time round it found a Trojan and something else which contained reference to Ad-aware...

Managed to get it removed and after several scans I'm apparently clear now. However, the machine is still struggling with simple tasks. I tried to install AVG but the PC just gave up.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :p

Disable system restore (viruses sometimes put themselves back on from this) and then re-run malwarebytes in safe mode / non safe mode to ensure nothing else is remaining.

Aldo do a run of Trend Micro Housecall and Kaspersky TDDS Killer and their free virus scanner.

If the above do find anything then keep running them until you get a clean sweep of no results. Then see if your machine runs better.

Don't forget to re-enable system restore once finished :)

Delete all your temp files from within the C: > Windows > Temp folder if you haven't already. Also do the same from within your personal user account under AppData. You will need to set hidden files and folders to be displayed in folder options. There will be Temp folders within certain folders in the AppData folder.

Then run the virus/spyware scans in safe mode after disabling system restore as previously mentioned. I'd also try Spybot and maybe Malwarebytes on top of any other scans.

Just a bit of an update to say thanks to all the people that gave advice and helped.

After all sorts of tinkering I found out that various aspects of the latest Ad-Aware version had been left on my PC after removing it. After a big purge my CPU usage went back to normal and I had my old but trusty computer back.

Out of curiosity, I re-downloaded and installed Ad-Aware and the same thing happened. When uninstalling it leaves a seperate safe browsing application behind which seems to be greedy and using all my resources.

It's a shame as I've used past versions for a number of years as they seemed to do their job without sapping my limited spec machine.

Thanks again :)
