CPU CHOICE.... HELP NEEDED !!!!!

No! :)

Q6600 for those wanting a quad core on a budget, preferably bought second hand for maximum bang for buck.

Q9450 for those wanting INTEL's latest and greatest Quad Core tech and who won't be upgrading for a wee while!

bugnotme: If you don't need a Quad-Core consider a Wolfdale dual-core (E7200, E8200, E8400).

I do agree with you Wayne, and I have Q9450's and E8400's myself however given you can get a new, low VID, Q6600 for under £120 delivered these days, I'd have to say Q6600 is the best all-round bang-for-buck CPU on sale at the moment.

WJA96:I agree . . . however I have slowly started to become a tad obsessive about ECO matters and therefore have taken it upon myself to convince people to spend the extra on what is clearly the more power efficient processor!

I haven't done the fine detail wattage number crunching yet but in my mind the Wolfdale/Yorkfield premium can be recouped in the savings you make on your electricity bill over the years and at the same time you are reducing your carbon footprint!

makes sense to me anyway, just thought I would let you know your dealing with a born again Eco-Warrior!

That'll be an Atom CPU for Mr Wayne next then:D

Yes, if it's power efficiency you're after then the E8500 is the one, but don't overclock it.

Woah!

Is Wayne really recommending the latest and greatest, or have I entered the Twilight Zone?

WJA96: Yes the INTEL Atom is interesting but it doesn't appear to be a stand alone chip that I can plug into my LGA775 PCI-E mobo, instead its soldered onto a mini ITX system board. If you know otherwise I am all ears! :)

Cob: I think you have misunderstood where I am coming from, I like new tech but yes I have gone out my way to voice my opinion on people buying kit they won't really use to its full potential and have it just sitting there eating wattage!

Wolfdale is the business atm, especially for a frequent upgrader/gamer, the only thing that draws me to Yorkfield quad is the way is chews through video encoding/transcoding duties and uses a lot less wattage than an Kentsfield Quad, especially when overclocked!

overclocked Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz is faster than every CPU in all tests which is not overclocked :D

which is nice to say... (based on SANDRA benches)
