CPU Choice

Hi
I am in the process of switching from a P4 3.2gig prescot (478/agp) system to AMD. Having always been an Intel user I'm hoping I won't regret it! Need some advise on CPU choice please.

Contenders are:-
Opteron 165, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+, or AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 90nm.

Motherboard will be Asus A8N-SLi Premium & graphics will be HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X1800 XL.
I 'm leaning towards dual core, but would like advise on which CPU will p*ss from the greatest height on my Intel (runs at 3.5gig rock solid 24/7 by the way)

cheers...

I'd go for the Opteron 165, just ordered the 170 myself as it was the highly sought after CCBWE 0550 UPMW stepping.
It has more L2 cache than the X24200 and from here it's only slightly more, and I believe the opteron 165s overclock better than the X2 chips.

If its dual core you want then opteron 170 is the way to go...
If your not to bothered about dual core then opteron 150 is the best chip...

The Opteron 150, which is clocked at 2.4 Ghz, is essentially a Deluxe AMD 4000+ San Diego, with a much stronger memory controller. It clocked very easily on Air to 2.8 Ghz, which is the same as an AMD FX-57. AMD Fastest Chip (and fastest in the world*). * Except for the Opteron 150 wich beats it in nearly all tests, and can easilY be clocked a lot faster with other forms of cooling, this is with just AIR !!!

On Watercooling or Phase Change cooling you would get even more out of it, possible 3 Ghz or more !!!

He might as well get an opty 146 if going single core or even a opty 144

Why would he want a 144 or 146 - From the way i read his post, he wants the fastes chip he can, and the fastest single core Cpu is the Opteron 150.
Opteron 144 is 1.8Ghz
Opteron 144 is 2.0Ghz
Opteron 148 is 2.2Ghz
Opteron 150 is 2.4Ghz
All of them are very good Cpu's, but the fastest is the 150....and if it is Oc it can outclass even the FX60 !!!
But as i said before if its Dual Core then the Opteron 170 is the one to go for... At the end of the day it's a weigh off, dictated by the primary use of the machine-and that is down to each individual.
If the main use is Gaming and such, then Single core is better. If its for Video Editing and Multi tasking then sure Dual Core is better.
Im not saying dont get Dual Core, but he did ask about the Single Core 64 4000, and in my opinion the Opteron 150 is far superior to that.

Your right you can yes, i miss worded that really - i meat within a reasonable price range. Given the prices of the Cpu's mentioned i thought the 150 a good choice.
The Opteron 154 is over £460 more than the 150 !!! and even the 152 is more than twice the price....
I certainly wouldnt pay that for a Single Core processor, at that sort of price i would go for a system..lol

Your not wrong !!!
I always look at the FX60 as a guide for other processors, to compare them against as the FX60 is an awsome peice of kit.
Although i think the price is just to much for the average person to look at.
Especially when you know two months down the line they'll be something else. Amd are stopping production of 939 chips soon, so M2 will be the new factor so to spend that amount of cash at this time is possibly not a viable option.

opterons & opterons!?

Hi
What are the Opteron 2 series ie. 244, 248, 250 etc. 940 pin devices.
How come OCUK seem to be the only vendor with 939 pin Opterons?

These Amd chips are too confusing..

If your looking to keep your PC for a while then better to go dual core imo. The Opteron 1-series are very popular due to the high overclocking potential. The 165 offers the best 'bang-per-buck' for dual core where as the 146 offers the same for single core but 'stepping' e.g CCBWE 0550, is very important as there can be as much as 500-700mhz difference between different steppings when looking at overclocking results, tread carefully and beware of certain auction sites that offer opterons - they are 'usually' bad clockers.

Opteron are server chips constructed of high quality silicon. They are designed to run for stabilty at lower voltages than retail chips. Which lends them to being overclocked for greater performance vs cost. For the home user you should balance this against potential reliability issues, you may need to go back to stock speeds and the extra cost of overclock quality mobo and ram.
