1) Dual Xeon 3.0Ghz/1MB, 800FSB
2)
Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz

The Dual Xenon is about 4 years old.
With everything else in the system being equal what would be faster? I am thinking of 'upgrading' my dedicated gaming server box From the xenon and have a good deal on the Core 2 Duo.

I don't have any more information than the above. Not counting any other part of the system which CPU is technically faster?

If the Xeon is about four years old, it's likely based on the Pentium 4/D archictecture, so the Core 2 Duo will be much faster.

Having just got the server back I can confirm it has 2 Intel Xeon 3GHZ/1MB cache which is at least 4 years old and shows up in the BIOS as: Genuine Intel X86 Family 15 Model 4 CPU.

How does it compare performance wise to a new Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHZ

Ok thanks guys that made my decision.

However, the company I wish to go with our out of stock are offering me a dual core intel xeon 3040.

How does this compare against a core2duo 2.2ghz?

The Xeon 3040 is pretty much just a Core 2 Duo E6300 - they're both LGA775, 1.86GHz and have 2MB of cache. So it's slower :)

bear in mind though that if you plan on overclocking you will probably achieve silly speeds with the xeon

I've messed with enough Core 2 based xeons to come to the conclusion theres absolutely no difference in overclockability between it and its core 2 branded counterparts, only difference is the name. Plus if its a serious server setup then everything should be run at stock speed tbh.
