CPU cooler height restriction

Hi all,

Reposted from the small form factor section..

My friend has a Silverstone SG01-Evolution case and is looking to buy an aftermarket CPU cooler to unlock some overclocking potential from his system. The problem is that the case is limiting in how high the coolers can be. The Silverstone website states that the "CPU cooler cannot exceed 82mm in height".

Silverstone themselves make a cooler - SilverStone NT06-E CPU Heatsink. I found a review of this at:

http://www.3dgameman.com/content/view/13158/36/1/5/

..the last line in the conclusion section says "being small you can't have as many heatpipes and fins as some of the massive cooler that are on the market. This is clearly not a heatsink for anyone intending in overclocking, rather a heatsink for small places at stock speeds." Bummer. However, I believe this was reviewed in stock state - without the optional 120mm fan attached to it. Presumably, with the fan the effectiveness of this cooler would increase, but still, this is not a confidence inspiring review! There is talk that the cooler is designed to be used fan-less in the Silverstone case, and the cooler's fans line up with the PSU's exhaust fan - meaning the PSU takes care of exhausting the warm air from the case. Would this be effective?

Does anyone have any experience of using the NT06-E with the fan attached?

Equally, can anyone suggest an alternative cooler that would meet the maximum 82mm height restriction?

If anyone can offer any suggestions, it would be very greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Just a few to start with - XP-120, NT06-E and a squashed SI-128 would be my pick. You can mount the fan under the fins on second two or just use the psu 120mm fan to 'pull' air through.

this thread my help if you want to 'bend' heatsink

Silverstone NT06
Silverstone NT06 - E
Silverstone NT06 - Lite
Thermalright XP-120 (plus s775 kit)
Thermalright MST-9775LE
Thermalright SI-128 (if you squash it)
Scythe KAMA CROSS(if you squash it)
Scythe SHURIKEN
Scythe Samurai Z Rev. B

will fit but need to reverse fan

Wow, thanks for such a detailed reply!! There's hope then! :)

Could you repost that link for me please, I think the link may be broken. Thanks again.

sorry I can't - didn't realised the forum was liked to another shop so it's a no-no sorry

I googled images of NT06 SG01 and found a string of images on the 3rd or 4th page.

two more for you as well - but need to reverse fan so stop clash with 120mm fan psu
