Looking to get a new cooler for the CPU to help keep it cool as when the heating it on i notice the CPU temps some times creeping up plus im thinking of overclocking it a bit if i get a good enough cooler

CPU is: Phenom II 720 x3.

Can go up to around £30/£35 but if there is anything just as good a bit cheaper i can at least keep my OH happy.

Also will i need to clean the old thermal paste off the cpu or will it work ok if there are 2 makes of thermal paste on the CPU?
Will the new cooler have some already on or will i have to buy some as well?

The EVO version might be OK, but I didn't think the standard Titan Fenrir was very good when I tried it on my Phenom II X6.
It didn't seem to keep it very cool, but maybe that was because it was cooling 6 cores. The fan on the EVO also seems different, which may help.
But I also didn't like the base (that makes contact with the CPU) because the heatpipes made it uneven which didn't seem to help spread the TIM well. The EVO may have improved this too though.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. It's under your budget, easy to install, and perfoms very well. And yes, I'm stuck right up AC's *you know what* but all of their products are EXCELLENT. You may also want to remove the thermal past and use AC's new MX-4.

http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=39_&mID=580 - As you can see, they out-perform pretty much every other major thermal paste/brand.

Freezer is not much better than the stock cooler and noisy, AVOID unless that's the only thing you can afford.

Best coolers are in the ¬30 range, then not much more improves really.
At least for PhenomIIs, you won't OC much further than 3.7-3.8 anyways without extreme volts which can be achieved by anything starting from zalman at 26.99 and going up.

Beware as a lot of the coolers which fit AM3, for some unknown reason, have the fans being vertical so the air gets pushed straight upwards.

Ony a few push it from front to rear, as is the general norm.

I use this and I know a few other peeps with Phenom procsssors use as it fits as it should - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-000-TL&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395

Bit over budget unfortunately and still needs a fan.

I've heard good things about these.

Which heatsinks do that? . . .sounds great! :D

There is no general norm is there? . . . I would like my heatsink to push the airflow from bottom to top but am stuck with from front to rear?

ThermoLab Baram

£32.99 inc

I've used that heatsink since Nov 2009 and it pushes the airflow from front to rear? . . . I would prefer it to push the air upwards and out the roof blowhole? . . . does the newer design have a different bracket to the one I bought or?

The question of direction of hsf blow depends on two things. First whether the hsf uses a standard amd type lever or requires removal of the boards plastic hsf mount and bolt fits to the board.

With almost all tower coolers, if they use standard amd lever mounting then the direction of blow is decided by how the mobo makers orientated the socket and plastic mounting. It really annoys me that it differs from board to board. Often it means that a mobo and a case are effectively incompatible. A top blowing hsf with no case blow-hole and a bottom mounted psu is utter madness.

(Rant about personal dislike ends here .....)

Cheers,

As stated above, I believe the Fenrir blows air straight upwards.

I does entirely depend on your case though. I have a CM 690 II, which has 2 main exiting blowholes. One at the rear of the top of the case, and one at the top of the rear of the case, so for me, I want the air being blown backwards towards the two fans. Straight up and some of the hot air will leak towards the front of the case. This, yet again, depends on where the CPU socket is on your motherboard and where the exiting fans are and if there is a top exiting fan. :)

The ram slots being covered would be another potential issue if the Baram was blowing air directly upwards as well.

Anyway, my idle temps with a Baram being cooled with a Noctua NF-P12.

Not too shabby as my room does get pretty warm as it is only tiny. :)

I bought the xigmatec s1283 (paid £20) to cool my phenom x2 555be, it also exhausts vertically, haven't really had much of a chance to test it though as have been busy, but reading some reviews seems suitable for me in my coolermaster elite 430 case. Although it does kinda block access to the inner two slots of ram for my mini-atx board...

3.97 @ 1.42 ?
It's either totally unstable or you have a super lucky chip in there.
Idle temps don't matter much, what you get after 30min orthos or IBT with those settings ?

Some good stats there with a nice overclock.

Cant make my mine up at the moment which one to get lol.

i dont need to worry about space as my case is big enough as iv got a thermaltake armor, so guess i can fit any one in there + iv got the air vents in the top of the case if needed.
