CPU Cooler NOOB help

The best way to remove thermal paste is exactly as J.Col states, personally I would not advise using nail polish remover as it is likely to leave some residue.

To remove any remaining residue I use a small drop of 99% Isopropyl Alcohol on a paper towel, then use another drop on a paper towel for a final wipe, it evaporates in seconds.

You can use 70% Isopropyl but for the price difference get the 99%. Rubbing alcohol also works but make sure it does not contain "Lanolin"

Please note: its not for drinking! :)

Ah, explains it all.

Get his help....or keep asking questions and don't do anything you're not sure of.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

im not that much of a noob, i can do anything on the computer etc well most things, and i installed my own graphics card, ram etc and i know most things im only 18 as well lol. im just not 100% comfortable installing a motherboard by myself as ive never done it before but once i have it infront of me i should be able to do it, its just a daunting task for me.

I'm also 18, I really recommend forking out for some IPA. I'm waiting for Royal Mail to deliver me a 250ml bottle, 99.8% purity and complete with a few lint free cloths for under a fiver including shipping from the auction site. And it'll last you a long time, not to mention having more uses than just cleaning the CPU up. It's a good investment.

Also, putting a PC together is a cake walk, if you're unsure on things just take half an hour to read through all the manuals and become familiar with the proceedure. But basically, check the standoffs are in the right place, stick the IO panel in the rear of the case, mount the cooler support to the back of the motherboard, bolt the cooler on, bolt the motherboard in. Hook up the power and the job's a good'un. :)

ye sounds simpl enough, sure ill be fine, but how do i take my io panel out, some people i see bash it out, won't that damage that part of the case?

Mine just clicked in, I imagine a firm shove will be all that's required. No bashing! If a firm shove doesn't do it try tapping around the edges with the handle of a screwdriver.

Seems to be a group of us 18 year old's on here
When you unscrew your motherboard it should become loose and you should be able to very easily pull it out.

Thermal paste remover: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TH-000-AC

It will be your best friend :)

That's just hideously overpriced. Isopropyl alcohol will do the job just as well, you can get 500ml for the same cost as that stuff (30ml per bottle there) once you factor in shipping, and IPA can be used for lots of other jobs as well. There's no reason to spend the extra on a brand name and some marketing gibberish.
