cpu cooler problem

just after finishing my newest build and my arctic cooling freezer 7 fan wont work. it tries to spin when comp is turned on but barely makes a full cycle before it stops, the bios also reports a cpu fan error. i thought it might be the mobo but the stock cooler fan works. i also tried the arctic fan in my old cpu but it didnt work either.

anyone have any idea what the problem is?

does the fan feel lose when you manualy turn it?

if it feels a bit stiff, sounds like bearings have gone....

but if it turns ok manualy , could be as simple as a bad connection to the motor....but possibly unrepairable anyway......

freezer fans have a thing where it only spins when it needs to
, does your PC crash or is it just worrying you ?

i can spin the fan easily, it feels jst like a normal fan.

ye a friend told me that the new coolers only spin at certain temps but it tries to spin when the computer is turned on and bios is reporting a cpu fan error.

yh it may report an error but what are the temps like . try leaving it on for a bit and see if it starts to spin once it gets hot .

:/ i removed and the thermal paste n put the stock cooler on now><

i did have it plugged n when i checked the temp in the bios it said 40oC and it wasnt spinning when i was still testing it

The fan is PWM controlled and simply was below it's threshold to start spinning. As your CPU temperature would increase so would the PWM duty cycle and it would start spinning.

The settings in BIOS for PWM control can usually be modified so that it would be spinning at lower temperatures.

Stock cooler is rubbish next to an aftermarket cooler.

yes it would if the fan isnt spinning up, i would say its faulty though as its all controlled via the main board anyway.....

Most motherboards send a 100% PWM on start up before reverting to their standard settings based on temperature. The 100% signal is what causes the fan to have it's initial spin but because the duty cycle based on temperature is so low on your system the fan won't spin until the CPU starts working.

I suppose it could be faulty but I think it's more likely that it's an incompatibility between the default PWM settings on your motherboard and the cooler's fan.

Turn off the alarm, adjust the fan setting in BIOS until the fan spins from a cold start, turn the alarm back on. Throw stock cooler in spare parts box. Be happy.

You can turn off the error message by disabling it in the PC health section I believe.

All PWM fans give a small kick when booting the PC but as has been stated, if the CPU temperature is below a threshold, it will not spin up. You can set the threshold using software.

To test if it works, take the case side panel off, download and install prime95, set it running and as the temperature rises check that the fan starts up. use HW monitor to check temperatures as you do this and if the temperature rises beyond 45-50C without the fan starting be ready to exit prime quickly.

I had this exact same problem with this same cooler and it was a faulty fan - once replaced it worked fine.

its an asus p7p55d-e mobo so the asus fan expert program can be used to to change the threshold? or would i need a diff program?

ok ran prime95 with the artic cooler fan pluged in and got this:

as u can see the cpu fan didnt spin at all even thou temp was wll over 60:/

Ignore the readings for a sec...is the fan physically not spinning at all even when you run prime? (have you opened the case's side panel to confirm?)

yep i have the side panel open n im able to look at it, i also went into asus fan expert n set the settings to turbo telling the fan to blow at full spd all the time

hmm seems i found the problem, the fan blades had come lose from its stand but hadnt completely from the fan so it looked like nothing was wrong with it, but i was able to push the blades back in n its spinning perfectly now

ok so now i need some thermal paste>< is arctic silver 5 the best?

I swear by MX-3 although MX-4 is supposed to be easier to apply. I don't think theresi a massive difference between temps with AS5 but I wanted to avoid curing times and conductivity issues if it went where it shouldn't.

mx-4 out of stock so guess ill buy mx-3, shame ill b using stock cooler till monday as nowhere near me sells any decent paste><
