Looking for a CPU cooler of the HTPC build I'm planning.
It's going to be cooling an A6 FM2 chip, in a Silverstone GD05 case, which has a limit of 70mm for the cooler (unless I remove the ODD, which I don't want to do)

I want it to be pretty cheap (under £35 at most) and it needs to be quiet (probably meaning I need a PWM fan on it) but the CPU won't be overclocked at all, so it doesn't need to be amazing at cooling, just sufficient.

Any suggestions?

Yep. I plan on building something similar sometime in the future, I may wait for Haswell & see if Intel manages to perfect 23.976FPS playback (the nirvana of HTPC's ) :D

Scythe "Big Shuriken 2 Rev.B".

or this (Smaller though, you'll probably need the Rev 'B' Version)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Scythe Shuriken Rev.B Quiet Low Profile CPU Cooler (Socket 939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £27.98
Total : £32.98 (includes shipping : £4.16).

or get this & add your own fan.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Prolimatech Samuel 17 CPU Cooler £32.98
Total : £37.97 (includes shipping : £4.16).

Cheers for that.

They were pretty much the ones I was thinking of anyway.

I was also considering this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Cooler Master GeminII M4 Low Profile CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366/1156/1155/775) £21.95
Total : £26.94 (includes shipping : £4.16).

How's that in comparrison, as it's a reasonable amount cheaper. I probably won't go for the Prolimatech, as it's already £33 before I add a fan, which would probably bump it up by another £5-10.

EDIT: Stupid me, just looked at the CM, doesn't have AMD mounts... It's hard not going Intel :p

What cooler did you go for in the end?

I use a Shuriken on my FM1 Llano HTPC in a Silverstone Milo ML-03 case.

Does a great job in a restrictive case and is super quiet whilst doing it. :)

Sorry for the delay SirChumpalot - only just spotted your post.

Full PC specs are:

A6-3500 tricore APU
Gigabyte A75 matx mobo
Scythe Shuriken low profile CPU cooler
4GB 1333MHz DDR3
Silverstone ML03 case
550w Yesico ATX PSU (Fanless design)
50GB Vertex 2 SSD
1000GB 3.5" mechanical drive
DVB-S2 and DVB-T TV cards
USB PICO WiFi Wireless N adapter

The case does have all four 80mm fan positions filled but all are quiet Akasa designs and have been 5v.

I used to use a larger case (Antec Fusion Max) with a Scythe ninja fitted. In that set up the case only had a single low rpm 120mm fan providing cool air for both the case and the processor. I'd say that the newer compact system is almost certainly as unobtrusive.

I haven't actually yet.

I've been waiting for the mobo I was wanting to come into stock, and since it has, I've been far too busy with Uni stuff to be able to order anything unfortunately.

I'll probably be going with the Shuriken though when I do get it.

Thanks, I've ordered the Scythe Big Shuriken 2 :)

Let me know how you get on with it. It seems like a great cooler for the price/noise/performance.
