CPU Core Speed bouncing? CPUZ

I used CPUZ lately and I noticed my CPU's core speed bouncing up and down. (E6750 2.66Ghz)

It'll start on 2.6GHz and then jump down to 1.9Ghz and stay at that speed for a while.

Is this the sign of a faulty CPU?

No it's fine. Intel Speedstep is reducing the speed of your cpu (by reducing the multiplier) when there isn't much for it to do (saving you on your electric bill). Open up cpuz and wait until the speed reduces, then launch a program and you will see the multiplier jump up.

Intel Speedstep. It's been around since the Pentium III and we get about three threads a week on this :)

Scared me the first time it happened too lol, no point running at 4.2Ghz if you're watching a film though is there so it's a pretty cool feature
