CPU creeching a lot

Hey guys

I am living in Italy for a while and bought a Packard Bell iMedia pc.

Everything runs fine except there is an very annoying and very loud screeching noise coming from the CPU.

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500 @ 3.3ghz, Quad

I am very certain it is the CPU due to how it behaves. If im moving my mouse around the tone of the screeching changes, when I reduce my CPU down (using ThrottleStop) to 900mhz (12%) it goes away.

If I run a TS Benchmark at 1024m it goes away, so its weird how it goes away when the clock speed is very, very low and goes away when the CPU is under heavy load. If I unzip lots of files it will slightly go away.

Its only on once Windows starts up (no sound on DOS)

Any clues?

I checked the CPU fan and unfortunately it wasn't that. I stopped the fan while the computer was still running and the screeching continued. =(

I had this with my gaming rig it was usually with the speakers plugged in and various movements with the cursor and programes changed the pitch of the sound. Maybe it's something to do with your sound card? Is the soundcard dedicated or onboard.

The sound is on-board and I have been using HDMI with sound through that (both through the onboard HDMI port and the graphics card HDMI).

I also removed Graphics card to see if that was it, but no luck there.

I am also considering the PSU to be the source, the PC is a Media so its in a very small barebone case and everythings compact. The PSU is very small, at least half the height what im used to with desktop PC's and I dont even think it has a fan inside.

This is surely very confusing, sounds like nails on a chalkboard !

I've noticed a very high pitch whine coming from my PC. Noticed it a lot when running WEI and when the PC POSTs. Have a feeling it's my PSU or motherboard capacitor. Sounds daft, but I'm sure I've read of it before.

Its more likely to be a capacitor squealing on the motherboard or PSU. You can put glue or nail polish on the area to help stop it, there is quite a lot of info about it online.

How would I know where to put some glue? Never done this kind of stuff.

It is defiantly not speakers, I've even unplugged everything but the keyboard (Required to boot up) and it still happens.

Might it be better to try a new motherboard?

I may have got a little further with it.

I brought the PC to work (I do IT Customer Support) and it started off a lot quieter and makes a faint screetching noise when something is happening say moving mouse or installing something.

So this is making me think it might be the PSU as that is the only thing that has changed, and like I said before it is a bit crappy and old, so I am going to try replace that with a test one and see what happens =D

Hello!

Sorry for bumping but I figured I'd provide a solution, I hate when Googling issues and people seem to fix but dont ever reply, pssh!

So anyway, the problem was the PSU, it wasnt the PSU screeching but it was reducing the voltage to the CPU a lot

What i noticed was when bringing it into work is it can get the maximum voltage power from the mains but at home the circuit to the room the PC was in is a split circuit and the PSU was not very good at handling this bounce rate in power.

I bought a new case recently so i could fit my gcard and i had to buy a new PSU, got a 600watt one and now it makes zero screeching anymore.

so my conclusion is that it wasnt getting a good power input before and the CPU was screeching.

So all along it was the PSU not providing good quality power to the rest of the system :p Glad you got it sorted! Which 600w PSU did you buy?

I got a Coolmaster, but its an older version to what you can buy now, like with built in wires not the customizable wire one and for 48 euros, had to make do as im living in italy temp so its something i plan to get rid of in a year!
