Hi all, I have just completed my first build and I am having an issue. Have used search but couldn't find anything about this.

On the first boot of the system I got the error message "CPU fan error press f1 to continue" upon inspection I saw that my cpu fan was spinning really slowely, I could see the logo. It span at the normal speed on initial boot, but by the time it was in the early post, or bios it was slow. When I went into the bios it said it was spinning about 450 rpm. The minimum speed was set to 600 rpm and I couldn't change it.

After some googleing I ended up disabling "cpu q control" and now the machine boots ok, when I'm in the bios it says the fan speed is about 1400 odd.

My question is really what have I done when I disabled q control, why have I had to do it, will it damage the machine having it disabled and can I fix it so that I can enable it and have the cpu fan working?

The cpu cooler was attatched properly and plugged in to the right sockets etc, two of us double checked and triple checked.

Mobo: ASUS P8Z68-V
CPU: Intel core i5 2500k
Cooler: Be Quiet Dark Rock Advanced

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like disabling it just causes the fan to run at full pelt all the time. If your fan was to stop working for whatever reason you'd no longer get a warning.

Considering the slow speed issue I'd say that the fan you have in use just runs slower than the BIOS is expecting. I wonder if you can increase the idle duty cycle in the q control so that the fan increases to beyond 600rpm. ie. From 20% duty cycle to 30% duty cycle or something. I've no idea of the capabilities of these BIOS fan controls as I haven't used them since my old aBit board.
