CPU Fan error?

Just when you think things are going smoothly lol,

So couple of days ago my fiancee turned the computer on and said there was a strange whirring high pitched noise, she restarted the computer and it was fine. I didn't think too much of it.

Well it's just happened again for me, machine failed to post and displayed a cpu fan error with the same high pitched whirring noise, checked the fans to see if was bearings etc and they're all fine. A quick reboot and the problem has gone again but I'm pretty concerned now. I've fired up Core Temp and core 1 is running at least a good 9c higher in idle than the rest of them.

Just a reminder that I'm running my 3930k at stock, haven't got round to watching those videos on my other thread yet and it's being cooled by the 280mm Be Quiet AIO paired with 2 silent wings 3's.

So do you guys think my pump is on its way out or is this something to do with the mainboard?
 
Try unplugging the pump the next time the noise starts and see if it disappears. Mine began whirring for a few seconds and would stop before I could get to the machine to investigate. It eventually started to happen more often and for longer periods.

How old is your cooler?
 
It's getting worse, coming and going while the pc is on. The cooler is only just a year old so it's still got plenty of warranty left. I was thinking about maybe jumping to a 360mm aio when I next upgrade, I've heard Be Quiet!'s RMA is a pain in the dangley bits so I think I may just buy one now. I can always flip the warranty replacement or repair on the MM.

@orbitalwalsh is there any particular cooler AIO or otherwise you'd recommend?
 
I had no problems with the RMA. Raised a request through their website, received an RMA number, included a note in the box with links to some YT videos showing the fault and received a replacement unit within 2 weeks. You do have to ship it back to Germany though which costs about £12.

I sold the replacement and went back to air, got myself a Noctua D15.

edit... If it's less than 12 months old, I think the supplier deals with the RMA.
 
Looks like the missus is going to be digging the boxes out of the attic for me tomorrow morning.

@agw_01 How do you find the noctua compares to the aio?
 
I think it's very very close. I only had a brief time with the AIO on this CPU (Ryzen 2600) before it went faulty but with only a single fan on the Noctua, my peak temps after 4 hours of OCCT are 51c.

That's with the CPU overclocked to 4GHz and RAM at 3.2GHz. The memory controller is in the CPU and running fast RAM has a surprising impact on CPU temperatures.

I'd also say the system with the Noctua is quite a bit quieter under full load than with the AIO, which is probably to be expected due to the 1x 140mm fan vs 2x 120s on the SilentLoop 240 I was running. Either way, it's just as good as I expected and well worth the money.

It's Alphacool (Bequiet silent loop OEM ) that's the pain ! Bequiet should be quiet easy :)

And to be honest, your unit with silent wing fans on would be hard to match ! Most of the cooling performance of an AIO still boils down to the fans, and you've got the best

(Silent loop pure wings aren't the best nor the quiets after 1400rpm...)
 
@orbitalwalsh apologies for all the questions, do you think I'd see much of a change jumping to the 360 silent loop and pairing it with silent wings over my current 280mm? Especially as I'm trying to talk myself out of pulling the trigger on the 9900k bundle and they run hot.
