CPU fan / heatsink recommendation please

My CPU fan is making a racket so I'm going to replace it, though it looks like I have to replace the fan / heatsink together? Whether or not this is true, I want a reasonable copper heatsink with quiet fan version for under or around ten pounds. It's for an AMD XP 2500+ which I believe is a socket A Barton. If it's relevant I like to overclock and currently have it @ 2GHz though hopefully it will do a bit more with a decent fan.

Any suggestions / recommendations are appreciated, thanks.

First off you'll have a hard time finding a totally quit cooler that will let you push your CPU much, you gotta have a little noise to get a little push.

I have always used Thermalright heatsinks. The latest they have released is the Thermalright SI-97 for a Socket A setup. I also think the SP-94 copper cooler will also fit a socket A, which I had on my old P4.

Now, with these heatsinks you need to use your own fan. I personally use a 120mmx35mm Panaflo. It aint the quietest but it dosen't scream either. If your PC is on the floor and not right next to your year you'll hardly hear it. These fans move a lot of air even though they quite are quiet.

It keeps my A64 at 43C load using the highest voltage and a medium overclock, which is pretty good! I use mine with a dab of Arctic Silver 5. For a Barton, you'll need to put a thin layer over the chip itself.

The panaflow fans only let down is that they do not have a speed controller or sensor.

Away from thermalright I have no experience so I'll leave other suggestions to people in the know :)

Thanks for the help.

I've gone for this one cause it moves more slowly, shifts more air, and is quieter than my current stock fan!

[Removed] - They are a competitor, ergo, you don't link to them.

I think it can't be worse than the current one I've got which is running @ 2.1GHz (just!) so hopefully it'll bring it down and be much quieter.

Thanks again

I think the done thing would just be to enter the modelname.
Anyway, I've got the Akasa AK-827 (£7 from OCUK) and it does the job and is fairly quiet. I'm getting about 36C on idle, mid 40s under load with an XP2200 at 1944mhz (ok, its only a 150mhz overclock but my RAM is rubbish).

...hope the link is ok? O'clockers don't sell that model so far as I can see? Apologies if it's not the done thing.

You best edit the web link out OcUK May not sell that fan but e buyers have things OcUK do sell. But yeah that fan should do.

Well spotted, but don't quote it next time ;)
