CPU for GA-965P-DS3

I have the same mobo as you in a spare PC and it goes to 430 fsb ... it is running a E6320 @ 3 GHz and it is somewhat stressed I feel at that lick (I got that chip to 460x7 on my IP35).

Would the E5200 "take advantage" of the overclockability of the mobo?

Of course, as a whole the E5200 was a very overclockable chip. Most people managed around 3.6 and some even 4ghz.

I've just finished building an E5200 budget rig for my nephew and I would say I was amazed by the result considering the amount of money I put in.

Yes, 4.0 is very attainable but I settled on 3.8OC as the performance gain is not that noticeable, more so, if you consider the voltage required to get to 4.0 Ghz.

I presume that because the E2180 is mentioned in Gigabytes CPU support page for the 965P that it will work, no other qualification required. I did one time buy a mobo that said will work with Pentium 4, but in fact it did not support my Pentium 4 530J.

Can't see any reason why it wouldn't work. the CPU supported lists are usually pretty accurate. Only ones you need to look out for are the "unofficially supported" CPUs, but even then it's usually fine.
