Looking to build a rig to go with a 1660 PC I already own, currently in an eGPU paired with my XPS 13 8th Gen i7. The monitor is a 1440p 75hz Acer. Ideally I'd like to game at this level but the current set up performance isn't great but I'm guessing that's possibly due to the loss over Thunderbolt 3.
Planning to then sell the XPS and get a Samsung tab.
Is it worth building a separate rig to go with the 1660 for the gains and if so what CPU should I go with? Cheers.

...and a ryzen option.
Not on a budget we won't. However glorious AMD's is, right now they don't have a solid budget competitor to the 11400F. So, the conversation comes down to budget.

What is your budget, @panthro ? Ryzen 5000 is approaching sensible prices finally, but if your budget is limited you can't really do much better than the above spec (although I personally wouldn't touch a Bitfenix PSU :p )

I'd also ask about what sort of longevity you'd expect fro this system. "Future-proofing" is a misnomer in tech, but even at the end of its life, AMD's AM4 platform will give you superior future expansion, something that you just can't do with Intel.

If you want something cheap and cheerful with the intent to run it into the ground, you can't really better a 11400F + B560 combo as detailed above. If you want something solid that could last you a while, Ryzen 5600X + B550 is arguably better since you have the option of 12 and 16 cores available to you later on.

dont rule out 2nd hand cpu market. cheapo x470 board with a 3600 cpu be less than 200 quid with potential to swap it out in future with high end zen3 part.

Here's a Ryzen alternative. Room for upgrade later with a decent motherboard, should you ever replace your GPU with something much, much faster, otherwise the CPU is going to make little to no difference. You could swap the SSD for a 1TB version which I'd probably do TBH.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor
Motherboard: MSI MAG B550M MORTAR Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory
Storage: Crucial P2 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
Case: KOLINK Citadel Mesh MicroATX Mini Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair TXM Gold 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply

Total: ~£475

I would also consider this motherboard:

The ATX version seems fine with a Core i7 11700,so the Core i5 11400F should be fine IMHO. It has the same VRM as the ATX B560 PRO4 AFAIK. The Vetroo V5 has gotten some decent reviews and is just under £30,and will do as an air cooler. The Arctic Freezer 34 eSports is available for under £30.

Thanks all, will have a look into the different options. Ideally I didn't want to spend over £400 but could move a bit if it's a big step up.
