Performing a lot of tasks using excel and I notice it only uses one core
What is an appropriate cpu?

Is it worth upgrading from i7 920

It is 2010, it is threaded for some functions, ie actual calculations, but when, say, inserting a row where it has to reshuffle, it isn't.

I was surprised to see this
 
Depends if it's already overclocked. Haswell would likely offer a boost due to better IPC results.

A better suggestion would be to stop using Excel for unsuitable workloads!
