CPU/GPU upgrade for 3yr old build

Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade my computer a bit as it's starting to decline a bit for my needs. It was originally built pre-Covid and i had always planned to buy a new GPU for it, but the 30 series came and went with shortages and price scalping, then the 40 series had power consumption and price issues...so i never got around to it. But it's time to upgrade now, my current build is below:

CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
GPU - MSI RX 5700 XT Gaming X
Mobo - MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk Wi-Fi
RAM - 16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB
PSU - Corsair RM650

I'd like a CPU/GPU upgrade, so i was thinking of the 7900XT/XTX for the GPU and a 5800X3D for the CPU. I'm sure my current motherboard is compatible, but i'm not 100% on whether the PSU will be enough, or if these selections are the best value/performance for the price range of the parts, as their average combined price is my budget for the upgrade. Alternatively would you say that it is worth waiting for the 7800x3D and upgrading the motherboard at the same time so i don't waste money long term?

Note that i have a 4K monitor setup already.

Thank you very much.

5800X3D & 7900 XT/XTX would be fine, no need to switch to the 7800X3D. The PSU, you could try it, but since it can spike to over 400 watts for the graphics card alone, personally I'd buy a new PSU like MSI's A1000G.

Thanks guys. Is 1000W necessary for this then? Going forward the bigger the better, i guess. But i was hoping to not spend £150+ on a PSU right now. But if it has to be done then i'll have to make room in the budget.

No, it might work with what you have, but if you're going to buy a new one then saving e.g. £30 for something that'll last you multiple rigs and offer more utility for the future seems a bit pointless.
Well if i keep my current one the cost on a PSU would be zero, but if i need a new one then it's £150+, so it's a bit more than £30. But you're right, it needs to be done sooner or later, 650W isn't enough these days.

Ah, I was referring to if 1000 watt is necessary, e.g. if you went for the A850G instead (£130).

I am running a 5800x with 7900xtx on 800w with no issues, was even fine when I turned up the gpu power 15%. If you go with the 7900xt and not the xtx I would try it with your current psu and see if it is ok , if it shuts down when stress testing you know you need a new psu and good advice above.
