CPU hitting 84 'idle'

Evening peeps,

Just now when I turned my desktop on, it seemed to take a while to turn on both before and after the Win 7 splash screen. My CPU fan is spinning faster than usual, and hwmonitor is reporting a temp of 38 with a max of 84. I haven't done anything on my computer for it to have reached those temps!

If I hit reset it goes to 78 or 80 or 82 etc. But the current temp is still at 38. It's as if the temperature is spiking very very quickly or something. The usage is at 4% or so.

I tried loading up ARMA II and it took an age to load. When it loaded the in engine main menu screen, all the trees and textures took about 20 seconds to pop- in fully. The CPU then hit 101c.

What is going on with my computer! It was fine the other day!

Try malwarebytes. Free 30 day trial of full product, which gives real time scanning, but you can still use it after that.

Its 38 when idle but it seems when you do anything at all then it skyrockets. You said it got to 80 and 100 degrees, only explanation is the cooler not making proper contact.

I have had a number of ATI drivers rocket my temps.

Usually on boot it would run and just max out the CPU, running at 100%, reaching 100c.

Keep process manager up and see if your CPU is getting some ridic usage, and see what process is causing it, if this is the case.

It isn't getting ridonculous usage, it's showing idle like 4% usage.

My cpu seems to be mounted as usual. It twists slightly from side to side, like it has always done, but desnt tilt or lift up or move... I'll reseat anyway.

Reseated the cooler. Noticed one of the knuts on the backplate was pretty loose. I've done it up, remounted with fresh thermal paste and my coolermaster 212+... It's still the same. Curretly doing a malware scan at 40c but with a max of 111. If I clear the max it says 95 and slowly rises to 111.

I've just noticed that The cores max are all around 50c. But, my aux1 is at 37 with a max of 73c...

Could it just be a hwmonitor and speed fan issue? Why would an issue like this start over night?

Malwarebytes came up empty which isn't suprising as it Is a relatively clean install. It looks like may be a non issue and just speedfan and hwmonitor playing games:s

well if it is just the monitoring playing games, why would your PC be slower loading your software, strange one!

Coretemp gave me the standard temps of 50-60c, so now I'm less sure about what's going on. I wouldn't be concerned if it had been doing this since day 1; I had an amd cpu that did the same a long time back. But cos it was over night with no hardware or software changes...

I bravely/foolishly thought id run prime, and my cores are at 65 and my cpus value is 69, but my cpu max is 138 lol. 138 is not possible, correct? So therefore it mist be a monitoring error?

daft question - have you tried putting a hand/finger on your cooler heatpipes? ie if its reporting 100+ degrees abut you're still touching the heatpipe with reasonable comfort then something's up with the monitor, or possibly the sensor on the cpu

If the heatpipe is comfortable to touch with 100+ degrees being reported then that to me would be a sure sign that the CPU cooler has come loose.
