Just got myself a 7950GT xxx (610/800...only 40MHz short of a GTX) and was wondering if my venice (:()at 2.7GHz will be holding it back at all?
Would i see an improvement changing to an opty 165 running at the same speed?

You would in games utilizing dual core. Otherwise no as I think 2.7Ghz would eradicate that. It also depends on what resolutions you are playing at?. The lower the resolution, the more the CPU gets used. So above 1280x1024 it becomes less dependant on the CPU and places the load on the graphics card more.

The dual core would benefit you though. I had a power surge which killed my BIOS on my motherboard last year so I went back to my older 3700+ @ 2.7Ghz and boy did I feel it. Single core is still good but dual core is where it's at at least now for a better performing system. Too many system hangs if some flaky program decides it wants to lock itself at 100% usage. With dual core you have another CPU (well 50% on each core) free so these annoyances go away :D.

Cheers for the quick reply mate :)

Monitors native is 1440x900.

Just moved from socket A and an xpm and really noticed the difference. Was a free upgrade as a mate gave me the cpu and 6600gt card.

As usual though once you start upgrading you just want more and more :)

nice to be only a couple of years behind everyone else now rather than four!!

cheers

Nae problem m8 :).

At that resolution you will be fine. I would save a few quid and keep your eye on the members market for a cheap X2 3800 that clocks to at least 2.6/2.7Ghz. This way you'll get the most out of newer titles.

XP is a bit slow compared to the Athlon 64's. My 9800Pro 3dmark2001 score went from 10,500 to a bit over 21,000 with the move. It made me realise the power that I'd been missing. I bet you'll be loving it as I know I was :D. Also congrats with landing the system, nice friend ;). Starting your Athlon 64 journey on a DFI Lan Party:eek:. I wish I was that lucky :) (2 power surges = 1 dead mobo and one's BIOS would revert back to stock every reboot for no OC (MSI and Gigabyte)).

Wasn't totally honest with my first post...already got an opty 165 thats good for 2.9+ (3+ under water) according to previous owner :)

Just been too lazy to pop it in. Thought i would enjoy the upgrade process rather than jumping straight to dual core. Plus just got the venice stable at present overclock and want to spend time enjoying the newly purchased card :) especially with cod4 and ut3 demos just out...perfect timing eh?!

Just gone and got a second lanparty for secend rig as it seems a shame to run an xpm when the venice is going spare soon.

Saying that sit will be sad to see the xpm (s) and nf7 (s) go...been a good friend the last few years but all good things come to an end. They will make a nice upgrade for family and friends...got 3 lots of each so shame to see them go to waste.

Sorry to hear about the power surges... nasty :(
Did you have a surge protector at the time? If so curious to know what one as it mustn't have done its job. Hope not a belkin as thats what i use.
Guess the bios chip got damaged (obviously u checked that battery didnt you :))

hmmm dont wait dude, put in the opty 165!!!!!!!

It will be way better in windows, apps that support it and importantly offer much better performance in dual core supported games (which Cod4 /unreal 3 are)!!

:o LMAO.

Pop that mo fo in and get overclocking. Best getting things like these out of the way as quick as possible. Do the Venice at the same time ;).

Yeah the CoD4 and UT3 demo's are excellent and it's a great time to have a good card to enjoy them. I love CoD4 but I'm already a bit wary of how multiplayer will perform as I already think CoD2 isn't up to the standards of CoD1 for speed and skill. Let's hope it's not the case. UT3 is just fun and fast. A lot of lag but it's only the demo and I was playing it late last night.

R.I.O.P.S old parts :( (rest in other peoples systems)

Aye, the surges did hurt as the first time I was skint and was without my PC for 2-3 weeks. My washing machine kinda blew up and when that happened it sent the surge and killed my gigabyte. Second time was just a power cut and both times there was no protection :o. Now I'm using a 6 port Belkin Surgemaster and it's been brilliant so far :). Oh and I changed my BIOS battery 3 times with no luck. It was a loose connection somewhere as I got it working but it never lasted.

okay guys i guess i really should get the opty in....been sitting here on my desk for over a week. Shame to have it sitting there unemployed :) It is saturday night after all so an all nighter is definately on the cards i think.

Yep the belkins are good. Not sure how easy it is to claim off the insurance they offer but it gives peace of mind that they are confident its upto the job.

Unemployed lol. Good luck :).

Yeah, the insurance is a cracker. I wonder if they've had to pay out yet?.
