CPU Idling with one core maxed out

... hey people...

today i moved my pc down my friends house.. everything seemed fine but in the last few hours one core of my CPU is maxxed out (50% load, 1 core 100% the other 0%), although sometimes both are at 50% (like right now)... restarting doesnt fix the problem, there are no processes taking up the CPU time, i have checked with process manager and task manager... my CPU is running hot so it must be actually doing the work because i notice games etc are much more "jittery". It usually idles around 35-38 , but its running 46-50 constantly

Any advise? thanks

I take it you looked in task manager and went into the processes tab and had a look at all the processes and saw whats taking up what? because it'll tell you there.

Only thing I can think of is possible virus or spy ware.

Seems strange that task manager is not picking anything up!

indeed :(... i thought at least process manager would show something but they both dont =/

doing a scan right now with NOD32, hopefully it'l pick something up and sort it :P

Have you connected your PC to a different network or added any different sofware!
Just thinking when I installed a Belkin wireless adapter it kept my cpu at
50% load due to a bug in the software for "wireless zero configuration in XP", had to disable this in the start up programmes.

First time I've seen that without a process hogging it. Make sure you run the scan in safe mode, as it tends to remove virus better.

have been messing around with network settings, but it happened before that, i will check it for sure, thanks

edit: virus scan finished - 0 infections ;<

Might be tellin you to suck egg's etc... but have you ticked the "Show Processes from all users" tick box @ the bottom of the processes tab in task manager???

Ummn you looking at the system idle process?

Can we have a screenshot of Task Manager?

no im not looking at the SIP, although i think the SIP usually reads 90+% even though 50% is in use and the temps are high, right now the temp is 48-50 degree's C,

not right now since im doing a few things, if it persists on later il post up a pic im a little busy right now

of course, have also even deleted my user profile recreated/used another profile within windows, i dont have multiple user support enabled either

this is shortly after a cold boot, the temps would usually idle at 35-39 degrees celcius (if im lucky:)..).. but because it is under "50% load".... :\... it is already 44+ , and will rise to about 48-50 where it should settle unless i do some heavy gaming which will be slightly higher (higher than my normal temps but my friends room is pretty hot)

you were lucky, that belkin badboy was a constant 100% on mines...

Thats what I mean by trying safe mode, it looks like a driver problem. You have two options really.

1) Roll back
2) New install.

Don't you just hate computers, when all you did was to move it :(

:( idd, well thx for the advice I guess i better get to work, or at the very least do a mass uninstall of drivers.. I'll let u know if it goes away ;p

is a typical example of what it does, although usually one core will be 0% the other @ 100%...

anyway, since u suggested it i have rolled back to SP2 (was on SP3 RC release), removed all drivers i can think of... reinstalled all drivers since that didnt help... the only thing i can think of is doing a fresh install at the moment... any ideas what it could be since it still did it after all that?... and it doesnt do it in safe mode :S.... anyhow I have noticed it doesnt really hinder the performance of software/games... (at least i dont think), the game/software will be able to use 100% of both cores ...

but the heat issue is my main concern, primarily because i have 2GB of nice OC'ing ram on my way and want to be able to overclock, a constant temperature of 50~ degree's isnt the best =/
