CPU Lapping

Wow, wonder how you got your storm so scratchy :D . I used to get similar scratches like that, but after I moved over to IHS-less it's all happy days :) (and my storm is more happy with the temps :) ). Too bad no one here has got the balls to rip off the IHS of their conroe :cool:
 
Storm was pre-owned bought from MM ;) There was quite a deep scratch to one side which took some getting out but its totally scratch free now :D. I aint gonna remove the ihs on conroe - too much risk as they aint like the old a64.

True... Would be fun to try with a cheapish E6300 though :D
 
Getting the solder to melt free of the core is the hard bit without destroying the core. Seen a couple of cpu cores destroyed due to this and the chances of success are slim. Instead of razor blading your fingers you now risk burning them severely. What us OC'rs will do in the quest for lower temps lol :D

Been considering this myself as I'm running about 48C Idle and over 60C under load, tried reseating the (stock) cooler, but didn't help. I got an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro to fit, but am waiting for my DS3 mobo to arrive before I break that out of the box.
If I don't see a marked drop in temps then I may well try lapping the CPU, bit dubious about the process though, I'm especially concerned about water getting under the IHS and causing probs.

Yeah, water is a worry for me too. Just be careful you only get it on the paper and not enough of it to make any sort of splash. You don't wanna be getting it on the pins of the CPU either :p May also be worth lapping the Freezer 7 Pro as supposedly the finish on them isn't great..!

I'll let you know what my results are when I get the paper and have a go myself. The only thing I'm thinking it where am I going to get a flat pane of glass... I may dismantle a photo frame.

It would be worth using the flatness check above when you have your cpu out of the board, it can't hurt :)

Well I got some 1500 grain paper, was the finest in halfords. There's 400 and 800 in the garage already. I'll give it a go in a bit :D

Has anyone had any horror stories regarding lapping? IMO there's not much that can go wrong unless you get the pins wet or touch them? :confused: :)
 
You'll only likely damage the CPU from touching the contacts if you're statically charged and discharge it into the chip.

Just try and avoid getting the metal dust/water mix into the air gap between CPU and heatspreader, you won't have any problems as long as you don't over do the water.

I was just in halfords, i thought the 1500 was a bit rough to touch so i didnt bother, wouldnt mind seeing your finished cpu, hope it goes well!
 
Well, it's all done... right down to the copper, 400, then 800, then 1500. Used a mirror to ensure a smooth surface. And the temps? Still high! 57'c full load and 45'c idle @ 2.1Ghz.

Hrm... What now? :(

Yeah, I was going to do that, it may be the stock cooler that's got an uneven surface, so I'll certainly rule that out before I set about invalidating my warranty!

I'll put pics up if I remember, not sure exactly when the DS3 will be arriving, the place I ordered it from is out of stock now. I cancelled my order with them as the price had also taken a £15 dip, so I'm better off waiting for new stock then re-ordering and saving the cash.
Oh and I get free shipping on my next order as well because they were unable to supply me :D
