Need some help on what would be the best way to go with upgrading my CPU, MB and ram.
Current setup is an i5 9400, 12gb ram and a 1080 GTX and it's showing signs of struggling.

I don't have a massive amount of money so generally don't buy the top end stuff but buy what I can afford and drop in a better CPU later down the line, so something that might be around for a while, and I will upgrade the gfx card at a later date.
I game on a 1080 monitor, I have a Corsair 850w psu and enough hard drives so just the mainboard, cpu and ram needed for now.

put the 9600x in there as you get monsterhunters game included...otherwise the 7600x is £210 or 7600 is £199....
cheapest option would be importing the cpu from china from well known site where yoiu can get the cpu for £140 odd..but of course you're loosing warranty etc
6000c30 ram sweet spot...make sure you get expo
gasming plus is need b850 board and has everything you want including wifi 7 if you ever upgrade your wifi down the line

My basket at OcUK:

going b650 boards, you'll need to do a bios update to run 9000 series cpu's, but the gigabyte eagle is entry level board and more than capable, or the plus tuf gaming wifi been the best seller last gen boards (B850 is basically a b650 board anyway), and still a fav of mine..think looks good and performs well...most b650 boards perfomed well apart from the asus prime cheaper boards, whose vrm were pretty bad and boards would throttle under load..wont be a problem for 7600-9600x but if you upgrade to a more powerfull cpu down the line, I'd just avoid them

there is a a620 or b840 boards(same), but they don't allow cpu overclocking so you wont be able to enable PBO in bois (precision boost overdrive), so I'd just skip them

the 7600 will come with a stock cooler in box, otherwise if your current can't be adapted, get something like the peerless assasin or arctic 36 freezer

I've no set budget but I'd like to keep it as low as possible, but as a starting point £400/500.
If you want to cheap out, you could go for a 12600K with a B760 (DDR4 version) motherboard and keep the RAM until you upgrade, but I'd recommend getting 32GB at this point whatever option you choose.

An even bigger cheap out (CPU has a cooler in the box):

If you can reinvest the money into a nice graphics card like a 9070/9070 XT, that would be a good option, but personally I'd get a 12600K or Ryzen 7600/9600 as a minimum.

Thanks guys, gives me something to look at and do a bit of research.
Long term, do you think AM5 is the way to go?
Newer ram, more headroom for CPU upgrades etc.
I've not kept an eye on the hardware side of things for years, kids and life gets in the way

100% am5 is the best current platform, but dont just turn your nose up at LGA1700, there is rumored to be now CPU's coming that are dropping the E-Cores.
if i was going to intel it would be with DDR5 support not DDR4

Yes AM5 would give you plenty of options.

£400 gets you a 7600x motherboard and 32gb memory

AM5 is the way to go but maybe look at gets 7500F if your looking to save a bit of cash. It Zen 4, 6 cores 12 threads but lacks the onboard GPU and be had for a lot cheaper then the 9600X.

Update, I've been given a MSI MPG B550 gaming plus motherboard foc.

I've had a quick look and could get a 5600x and 32gb of ram for around £200 and it would be a massive upgrade.
Downside would be you can't drop much in better than it.

Worth going this way over a cheap AM5 setup?

I would say that while it is not the best by todays standards and a end of life platform, it will still be usable for quite a few years yet.

You could still get a X3D or 12/16 core CPU later if you need it.

Maybe see if they will take £80 for this B-Grade CPU.

I am still on AM4 and see no reason to upgrade any time soon.

Yes can be done cheaper.

I would get 5600 for £99
32gb DDR4 3200mhz £55
