CPU & memory showing wrong speed

Hi guys,

I was hoping somebody could help out with this problem...

Current Spec:
XP64 Pro
Asus P5W DH Deluxe
Core Duo E6600
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB)

When I start my comp I get the following "American Megatrends" screen which shows my memory and cpu at slower speeds:

I'm don't know much about overclocking but i'm guessing the speeds are related e.g. slower memory causing slower cpu??

Can anybody point me in the direction of how to solve this?

Thanks in advance for any help ;)

You may need to manualy adjust the memory speed (800mhz) and timmings, like matty114 said check your processor fsb as it should read 2.4.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies.

My FSB was already showing as 266. I changed the memory to 800mhz as it was on auto and it is now showing correctly as PC2-6400.

The CPU is still showing as 2.13 though, any ideas?

Thanks :)

If it isn't your FSB - which should be set to 266, if it's AUTO, try manually setting it to 266 - change your multiplier to 9. The option should be in the same section and it'll be named something like "CPU ratio" or "CPU multiplier", you'll know it when you find it because you'reonly able to set it to 6, 7, 8 or 9. Again, if it's set to AUTO, manually set it to 9.

As for the memory, if it's not detecting it correctly, try manually setting it in the BIOS, leave all the timings on AUTO unless you feel like fiddling and potentially making your system less stable.

When you get to Windows, try tunning CPU-Z to find out the speed it's running at, make sure you run something, play a video, anything, just make sure your CPU is doing something when you check CPU-Z incase you've got speedstep enabled (which throttles the CPU down in speed when it's not needed, to save power/run cooler etc.).

Edit: Oops, took too long to write that, by the look of it. :S

Hi hterag,

The multiplier was showing as 9, I changed it to the manual setting and set it to 9 and my cpu is now showing at the correct speed! Nice one!

Thanks for the help :)

Thanks for the help :)

No problem, glad you've got it sorted. Now go and overclock that chip! :P

Disable EIST/SpeedStep in your BIOS, that should make sure you are running at full speed :)

I personally keep Speedstep enabled, I don't have the enhanced C1E enabled because that does make the chip unstable (it can't run at 2.7GHz at 1.1v...), but Speedstep doesn't make your system slower, it just slows the chip down when it's not in use. In my opinion, there's no reason not to have Speedstep enabled unless you're running a high end server that's constantly needed to be on it's toes, where a few milliseconds mean you lose a few million pounds. :P

At the desktop, you never need your CPU overclocked, heck, you could probably happily run it at 1GHz for most things and as soon as it's needed, it'll throttle straight back up (the delay is negligible), in the mean time you've given your CPU a longer life.
